4.0 out of 5 stars Humble Pie
I've never been a Gordon Ramsey fan - I've always thought he was playing a character on TV and he seemed a little too smug for me. I wouldn't have read this autobiography either except that it was recommended to me. 3.0 out of 5 stars Humble Pie Leaves Memorable Taste in Mouth
This is a quick and easy read written in an autobiographical format. Ramsay goes into some detail about his difficult youth, but runs pretty quickly through the years after, barely highlighting some of his career events. He barely, if at all, addresses his controversial nature, but you still walk away from this book knowing more about him than you did before you read it...

I've never been a Gordon Ramsey fan - I've always thought he was playing a character on TV and he seemed a little too smug for me. I wouldn't have read this autobiography either except that it was recommended to me. As with all autobiographies, the essence of the man comes through - and he is a lot more likeable than I thought he would be. After finishing the book I'm less inclined to believe that he is "putting it on" for TV and I actually think that he doesn't really give a damm what other people think and that he is fanatically driven by what he does. I'm not sure he's someone that I would want to have a beer with - but I'm not the hater that I was either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humble Pie, March 5, 2011
This review is from: Humble Pie.Special Edition.Only 1.99. (Quick Reads) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book by Ramsay. It is very readable and he comes across as supremely passionate about his cuisine and career. It is written in his own style and reads almost as he would say it. The details of his life, his upbringing, culinary education and family dynamics make for engrossing reading and this makes for an easy couple of days reading without any deeper pretensions. Well worth a go.

As it says it's a "quick read" which meant I was done with it in one afternoon. But it was very interesting and told me some things that I didn't know about Gordon Ramsay from other books I have read. I highly recommend it for your Gordon Ramsay library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, June 14, 2009
This review is from: Humble Pie.Special Edition.Only 1.99. (Quick Reads) (Paperback)
If you ever have seen Gordan Ramsey on TV you know what he is about, rough, gruff, mean and likes to curse.

If you watch Kitchen Nightmares, he really seems like, well a bad guy. But it also comes across that he really does care about the people he is trying to help, and it becomes more clear as each episode goes on.

This book ties it all together in an honest book that goes through his life and the challenges he has faced getting where he is now. In almost classic fashion he made it past a harsh childhood and family problems to become who he is, and explains the fact that underneath the gruff and rough persona that is alot of what you see on television, when it comes down to it he really does care.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into Gordon's childhood and growing up, November 9, 2008
This review is from: Humble Pie.Special Edition.Only 1.99. (Quick Reads) (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book quite a bit, it was a quick read, with just a few pages that I skimmed over because they were sort of irrelevant (the listing out of soccer matches got boring quickly).

I definitely felt for Gordon when reading about his incredibly crappy childhood and adolescence. I giggled when I read about him shagging a restaurant owner's wife when he was 19.

He definitely has had an interesting life. I think this book puts a more human face on his persona.

He comes out as a likeable, driven, and ambitious professional. Just two small gripes - he's so gung-ho about not spoiling his children that he goes IMO overboard. As a parent myself, I don't think that kids who get more than 1 Christmas gift each will grow up spoiled. For some reason, Gordon seems to think that giving them 1 pound allowance and just 1 present each will ensure that they grow up selfless and appreciative.

Another thing that bugged me a bit was his insistance that in the restaurant kitchen, the staff is not allowed to laugh or wear their name embroidered on their chef's whites.

Gordon - no matter how serious you think your job is, it's just cooking. You're not curing cancer.

P.S. At first I thought "His wife must be a saint to put up with him" but then I realized that he's never home anyway! She probably lets him feel like the boss when he IS at home, and the remaining time, she just runs things the way she sees fit and he's none the wiser.

I really enjoyed this small, fast read. It shows that you don't need a lot of words to relay what you want people to know. I've been a huge Gordon fan and I am an even bigger fan now (if that were possible). His background is not what you'd expect.
A fast read that gives you a look at what made Gordon Ramsay.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, January 1, 2012

I really enjoyed this book. It is by no means a cookbook, but rather it takes you inside Gordon Ramsay's personal life. By the end of the book, I was left really inspired and have such a different view on the man now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect slice of Gordon Ramsay., October 12, 2011

After watching several of Gordon Ramsay's TV shows and being inspired to become a better cook at home I was curious to find out more about the man behind the empire. I decided to pick this 94pg. novella up before committing to one of the large books in case the ghost writer lost Gordon's famous flare.

I'm happy to say that it was a treat and a breeze to read. "Humble Pie" is a perfect slice into the life of Gordon Ramsay. Lots of brutal honesty for which the world both loves and hates him. It's a perfect afternoon read if you're interested in a bit of his background.

I will definitely be purchasing "Playing with Fire" next. I liked this slice of pie so much I want the whole thing!

He barely, if at all, addresses his controversial nature, but you still walk away from this book knowing more about him than you did before you read it. There is reason to respect the man after you understand where he has come from, and how hard he has worked to get where he is. He is definitely a man of passion and vision. This book is not a complete and detailed retelling of Ramsay's lfe, but it helps fill in some of the gaps if you're Ramsay-curious.

I didn't really want to have to read through an entire biography, so I thought this might be just my thing. Unfortunately, it was a bit too short. Felt like there was waaaaaaaay too much missing or skimmed over. It definitely did put Gordon Ramsay in a new light for me. I'll probably pick up a proper biography at some point, though this was an okay starting point. Considering the length, I don't think it was value for money at all. I read it in less than 2 hours. There are only about 80 pages, and the print is quite large.
