More About the Author

Jerry Rohde has been writing guidebooks to the Northwest for the last 20 years. He'd like to keep at it for at least another 20. Rohde coauthors many of his books with his wife, Gisela. She specializes in the natural history and he focuses on the human history. When doing trail guides, Gisela wears the pedometer and Jerry carries the notebook, which is small. That's OK, because Jerry writes small, too.

The Rohdes love hiking, researching, and helping readers gain a sense of place. "We feel it's our job to be Place Rangers," says Jerry. "We don't care if we make much money at it, but we do care that we inform, entertain, and inspire readers. We love it when someone tells us that they've used one of our books to get out of the house and explore nature. We wouldn't trade jobs with anyone."

After reading this book and then hiking through the park for a couple of years, i've come to love the book like an old friend, and indeed it seems to make its way into my backpack for all of my hiking and camping adventures; be they in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park or not! Altghough, there have been a few changes to the park because of storms and the such which happened about five years after the book was written, consequently resulting in an abrupt u-turn on the trail upon realization that our trail no longer continued forth as a golden road to devotion but rather as a landslide of debris and steep slope. Let this not detract from the purchase, her pages will quench the mind with tasty tidbits that seal those savory camping crescendos in the mind for eternity, with an additional hint of intellect and compassion for nature.
