5.0 out of 5 stars The second - best Bellow, January 9, 2011
This review is from: Humboldt's Gift (Paperback)
Bellow's brilliance works here at an overpowering rate. His insights and descriptions are remarkable. The intellectual and street battlegrounds are credibly and even excitingly portrayed. But this work is in my judgment not quite the highest level Bellow reaches. My sense that he did his job best with 'Seize the Day' and 'Herzog'. Here there is a certain sense of forcing and too much time given in my feeling to the minor criminal character, Richard Cantible and the involvement with him. The tragedy of Humboldt (Bellow's friend Delmore Schwartz) is portayed with passionate credibility. There are as always in Bellow 'riffs' of description which are incomparable in their liveliness and authenticity. The voice of Bellow works here but as with Augie March it seems to me working a bit too manically. This is a great read but it is not Bellow's masterpiece.
