David Hume's Treatise on Human Nature and Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding are amongst the most widely-studies texts on philosophy. Hume's Epistemology and Metaphysics: An Introduction presents in a clear, concise and accessible manner the key themes of these texts. Georges Dicker clarifies Hume's views on meaning, knowledge, causality, and sense perception step by step and provides us with a sharp picture of how philosophical thinking has been influenced by Hume. Accessible to anyone coming to Hume for the first time, Hume's Epistemology and Metaphysics is an indispensible guide to Hume's philosophical thinking.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is the clearest treatment of Hume's epistemology and metaphysics I have come across. I would certainly recommend it to anyone studying Hume for the first time.
–Eli Hirsch, Brandeis University

This is an excellent book. Dicker concentrates squarely on Hume's central arguments, usefully assessing them as contributions to contemporary philosophical debates. He also pays scrupulous attention to the texts, taking account of recent Hume scholarship but remaining attentive to the needs of inexperienced students
.
–Gary Iseminger, Carleton College

5.0 out of 5 stars The contents are really reflected in the title of this book, February 27, 1999
This review is from: Hume's Epistemology and Metaphysics: An Introduction (Paperback)
I strongly recommend you to read this book if you wanna know Hume's philosophy but have never read anything about him, that is, it is a very good introduction to Hume. For Dicker makes very "clear and concise" what's going on especailly Hume's Inquiry and the First Book of the Treatise. And he also explains basic and important concepts of epistemology and metaphysics with relation to Hume. Thus it's understandable even to those who don't know anything about philosophy. And moreover he uses very plain and easy English, which even non-native speakers of English can easily understand (in realily, I'm not a native of English). But it might be a little boring or too easy if you have already studied much about Hume. However even in that case it will be good if you wanna brush up your understanding of Hume or even epistemology and metaphysics in general. And also the auther, namely Geroges Dick, publishes another book on philosophy, whose title is "Descartes: an analytical and historical introduction". I also read this one. And this is also very good. So if you are a philosophy student , I also recommend you to read this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and clearly written - a necessary book on Hume, July 6, 2000
This review is from: Hume's Epistemology and Metaphysics: An Introduction (Paperback)
As a graduate student studying for comprehensive exams, Dicker's book provided me with a clear and through exposition/commentary on Hume. The book is very accessible, enjoyable to read, and leaves the reader with a thirst for learning even more about Hume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Hume's Views on Knowledge, May 5, 2007
This review is from: Hume's Epistemology and Metaphysics: An Introduction (Paperback)
This is a superb introduction to Hume's thought on the problems of human knowledge. The prose is clear, the analysis insightful, and the opinions are very helpful for the beginner as well as for the Hume scholar.

I also highly recommend Professor Dicker's books on Kant and Descartes.
