5.0 out of 5 stars great add on to the humminbird fishfinder
My boat had an old pitot speed sensor hooked up to a speedometer that didn't show speed below 10mph which can be fast in no-wake zones. I purchased the Humminbird 525 fishfinder and added this speed sensor which works really well as low as 2mph. The fishfinder hooks up with a cable keyed to fit in the right spot (idiot proof) and the unit is plug and play. The...

3.0 out of 5 stars not for my application
This sensor is no good for controlling trolling speed.
Works fine for faster speeds. I disagree that more words are needed.

The instruction stated to use 5/8" drill bit on the transom, but you could use a 1/2" and save the trouble of looking for the larger bit. This product is great!

Worked fine once we lowered it a bit more. I have a pontoon boat and where the unit was mounted was not quite low enough so it got strange readings. Once it was positioned lower down so contact with the water was better it works great! It needs to be somewhat submerged on a pontoon boat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humminbird Speed Sensor Great for Slower Speeds, October 16, 2011

I purchased this speed sensor as an accessory to my Hummminbird 570. I needed it mainly to have the ability to see my speed at trolling speeds. My boat speedometer doesn't start to read until it's over 15 mph. With this sensor, I can see me speed starting at 2.2 mph. With this information, I can adjust my chart speed on the 570 to match my trolling speed. However, at higher speeds, the indicated speed is not consistent with the boat's speedo, nor a hand held gps. At 50 mph, it indicates 28 mph. In defense of the Humminbird speed sensor, my boat has a step hull, plus it is angled towards the center of the boat. This puts the sensor at about a 10-15 degree angle which I presume is not allowing the paddle wheel to rotate freely. I plan on putting a shim behind the one side of the mount to better align it with the direction of the water flow. It does, however perform flawlessly for my required purpose.

This is an excellent sensor, but I found out that those depthfinders listed as "optional" do not recognize the sensor and it will NOT work with those. Call or email Humminbird and verify that this sensor will work with your depthfinder before you order. I had just enough cable to reach my front depthfinder and it does work with it, though I preferred to have it hooked up to my back one.
