After checking the web for reviews on Lowrance and Humminbird both and finding horror stories anymore about customer service from Lowrance and wait times of months, not to mention being charged to repair units under warranty, I decided to try this out as I called them several times with questions and got excellent responses each time.

Mounted on the trolling motor on the front of the boat and I have to say it is sweet. Works exactly as advertised with no problems. SI is awesome compared to older graphs.

I have also done a software update using a sd card which worked flawlessly. So far this unit is well worth the money.

The Humminbird 718 is an excellent choice for the angler or recreational boater looking for an affordable Fishfinder. It doesn't have a flashy color display, but I don't see the advantage of a color display for a basic Fishfinder. The simple black and white display affords a nice crisp contrast which is easy to see in bright sunlight.

You will have to take the time to carefully read the manual if this is your first time using a fish finder. The display can be very complex and confusing if you don't read the manual. The 718 is easy to customize to your own preferences. For example, I set the display to show a solid black sea bottom vs. the default setting that allows the unit to display different shades of grey according to the density of the bottom. I also customized the display to show little fish icons for fish instead of the default setting which is an arch representing the reflection of the sound. I like simple and easy to read! I don't think I would like it as much if I couldn't customize the readout.

The 718 can also be paired with a GPS antennae, but don't expect the 718 to become a chartplotter with the addition of GPS. With the addition of GPS the 718 does not have the capability to store or display charts or maps so your route is displayed as a black line on a grid with no visible shoreline. I find the GPS very useful for saving waypoints, routes, and displaying the speed and location of the boat.

I give the Humminbird 718 5 stars for being affordable and easy to use. I recommend adding the GPS receiver.

I purchased this unit in March, 2011 and used it 3 times. The second time the GPS tracking would not track under 2mph and would only show a donut, which is very frustrating if trying to stay over a marked fishing spot.

I contacted Humminbird and they said to download update 5.410 and it would fix the problem. I did this.

I used it the third time and the GPS tracking problem had not been fixed with the new update. This time out the depth reading began going crazy. I was in approximately 180 ft. of water and it was reading all the way down to 1.7 ft. and bouncing all over. I spoke with 3 different Humminbird techs via phone while I was on the water and we tried all kinds of settings and could not fix the problem.

Humminbird is going to send me a new transducer to try, but I do not believe it will fix it. If not, they said I will have to send the unit in to them.

It is ridiculous to pay over $800 for an item and it not work correctly, so I would not buy this item until Humminbird gets these issues resolved if I were you.

This device seems to do everything it says it will do, but; You need to study, study, study the displays to be able to understand what you are looking at. I am sure that I will enjoy this more after I have used it for a few months. The gps, used with a LakeMaster chart is awesome. The si, and di views need to be used at a steady speed (still to be determined in my case) but they do work as advertised. If you can afford it, the larger screen is advised. I would buy this again if I need another aone.

My husband and I just bought a Pontoon Boat for fishing and pleasure. We both enjoy fishing so we wanted to get some good equipment to go along with the boat and this unit was highly recommended. It may even be more than we need right now because it is "Loaded" with all kinds of good things. The graphics are easy to read and clear. The depth finder with alarm is very helpful. Even when the sun is shining on the screen, it is clear and easy to read. The sonar gives a real wide angle of what is below us and in great detail.
This unit has more maps than we will ever use, but it is good to know they are there should we decide to hit some other fishing areas.
Our boat dealer was kind enough to instll this unit on the boat for us and the hookup they used moves it in all different directions and allows us to remove it easily before trailering the boaot home and pop it on when we are ready to hit the water.
I don't see how anyone could be disappointed with this unit.
My husband, who is not a "Techie" (has problems running a computer) has learned very quickly how to operate this unit. We LOVE it.
We highly recommend it.
When I had a couple of questions, support from Humminbird was excellent too!

This is an excellent fishfinder but if you can possibly swing it upgrade to a larger screen model, some of the details are harder to see and you can zoom in on them but the picture isn't as clear. Glad I didn't buy the Lowrance which I was contemplating

i bought this 718 last month. Only problem is when I'm in four feet of water it reads from 2.9 to 6.1 even when the boat is not moving. It never stays still. I talked with a Humminbird tech and he decided I had a bad transducer. He sent me out a new one (great service) and said to just keep the old one. Great! Only problem was it didn't solve the problem. Talked with Amazon and they sent me a replacement unit. Same problem. I don't know what to try next because I really like Humminbird but until I can resolve the issue, I can't recommend this unit.

I recently purchased a gps/fishfinder combo. I love great product for a great price. Has all the top of the line features including crystal clear imaging.I would suggest this product to anyone !

I would like to have known that I needed a new Navionics card to navigate the west coast ocean waters. I may have missed this in my research, but the added expense may have changed my decision to purchase this unit.

Tengan cuidado cuando vayan a comprar los productos Humminbird. Ellos en ninguna parte de su web site advierten que los equipos comprados en USA no utilizan unidades mètricas (profundidad y distancias en metros,temperatura en grados celcius, ni otro idioma que no sea Ingles o Frances). Los equipos comprados en USA solo vienen en unidades imperiales (pies, farenheit). Es imposible hacer el cambio de unidades en estos equipos, la unica manera es comprar los equipos con versiòn Internacional (Humminbird no lo advierte) y el costo es muy superior solo por el hecho de ser versiòn internacional.

Otro punto importante es que para los que tienen la interfaz de GPS, no se puede ajustar el cambio de horario.
