Gr 4-6--This fact-filled text provides a readable description of hummingbirds' physical characteristics, behavior, and habitat. Chapters such as "Hungry, Hovering Hummers"; "Bills for Feeding"; and "Home in the Americas" bring to light fascinating details about these unique birds found only in the Americas. Rauzon explains how hummingbirds must consume half of their body weight every day, how their wing structure differs from that of other birds, and how they alternate between a hyperactive state and a comalike torpor to conserve energy. Although full-color photographs appear throughout, this title is not as lavishly illustrated as Esther Quesada Tyrrell's Hummingbirds (Crown, 1992). However, it is an accessible and useful addition for homework support and general-interest collections.
