5.0 out of 5 stars This release is the sound of evolution
Humo De Tabaco is the sound of evolution. With each generation music changes & grows; evolving into a form that is an invitation to others to get to know us all beter. This album invites you to Cuba and allows you to listen to true musicianship with influences of Rock, Pop & R&B. No Buena Vista Social Club, this is young & fresh, contemplative and exciting. It's all...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I met this guy in a busy cafe in San Francisco. He offered to share a table since we were both alone. After talking to him and hearing how he described his music and his inspirations, I was intrigued. I listened to all the tracks and am going to order this cd. I think my husband, who is also Cuban, is really going to enjoy it. Not only does he make great music, but...

4.0 out of 5 stars can't wait to hear more, October 18, 2006
This review is from: Humo De Tabaco (Audio CD)
Very good record. Even though this is much more polyrhythmic than the music of Silvio Rodriguez, you can tell he knows that music's lyrics well. I think the lean arrangements are what makes the music sound fresh. My only two complaints: 1) the strings are a distraction, obviously added onto already-existing arrangements that can stand on their own, and 2) the two duets are lousy...they seem forced and awkward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Recording!, December 20, 2006

To address other negative comments made of this album: Duke Ellington once said "If it sounds good, it IS good."

I am a musician and I have a critical ear. This album sounds good. It doesn't matter how it is classified.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homo de tabaco is Good!, April 29, 2006

This guy is what the new wave in Cuba is all about. All the songs are good. If you like the traditional songs with some serious acoustic (Pancho Amat) tres, and Chucho Valdes on piano with a great conga player this is for you. I heard it for the first time here in Eastern Europe. It has a good rhythm similar to the R&B with a blend of sonmontuno. The music is inspiring to the tobacco smoker. Buy it!

The Buena Vista thing, as wonderful as it is, is a little played out. This is something different -- it's folksy and tropical, a real breath of fresh air. Jazzy, guitar-ry, elegant, cool. So if you're looking for Buena Vista, and only for Buena Vista type recordings, you may not like this. But I suspect that most will be blown away by this original CD anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is not authentic, October 4, 2005
This review is from: Humo De Tabaco (Audio CD)
A pretentious CD that tries to be a contemporary Cuban recording and fails miserably. It has occasional Cuban flavours but then you realise how dated and forced these instances are. There are much better REAL Cuban records out there.
