Sports simulations abound, but those appropriate for children are rare. In fact, this is the first we've seen with children as players. First you select a team name and then pick your team. You can choose from 30 neighborhood children, each with four abilities: batting, running, pitching and fielding. The best part is that each player has his or her own personality, and there are equal numbers of boys and girls to choose from, several races represented and one child in a wheelchair. Next, you start playing the games. These can be customized a great deal. For example, you can turn off the crowd sounds or adjust the difficulty level of hitting. There's even a T-ball mode! Games can be saved, which is a good thing, as they can easily take up to 30 minutes from start to finish. When your team is at bat, you select options that control when and how hard your player swings. Like real baseball, striking out is easy, which frustrated children at first. We thought that the game should be easier to use when first starting out. In all cases, the longer our testers spent with this program, the more they grew involved with the players and liked the experience. There's also a nice amount of baseball strategy and information mixed into the game. For example, you can observe the various pitches and then test different stances when batting. In all, this is a very entertaining program that will keep even non-baseball fans engaged, providing they get past the first few games. See also Backyard Baseball 2001.

Pick a team from the backyard kids and play on fields all around theneighborhood. Play pick-up games, practice batting, keep track of stats, compete in single games or a whole season - you can even set the rules! Features all of the realism and statistics of adult baseball games, but with simple controls that even youcan master.

You are provided with several options at the start of Backyard Baseball. You can look in the trophy case for Hall of Fame information, click on the bulletin board to start  a season, look at the baseball cards for playerinformation or choose a filed to start a pick up game.

Game Modes include:

Random Pick-up
A quick way to jump right in! The computer chooses a random team for you and itself and the game starts immediately

Single Game
You take turns with the computer choosing players from a random pool of characters.

Season
You create a team and manage the team through a 14 game series. The opposing teams are computer generated. At theend of the season the best two teams advance to the BBL playoffs (best of 3).  The playoffs winner advances to the championship series which consists of the Super entire National tournament (best of 3) and then the Ultra Grand World championshipof the Universe Series (best of 5)!


The rules for Backyard Baseball are a hybrid of Major and Little League rules.

• Tagging up is allowed
