Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA. These excellent resources include everything students will need for reports: distribution, biology, behavior, historical background, conservation techniques, and future trends. All of these topics are covered in the clear, easy-to-read texts. The books are lavishly illustrated with more than 50 full-color photographs that bring these animals to vibrant life. The authors are all leading experts in their fields. Unfortunately, Humpback Whales and Tigers have no index or bibliography. They do have a short fact sheet with a recommended reading list. Despite these flaws, these titles will be well used for research and enjoyed as general reading.?Robin Deffendall, Prince William Public Library System, VA

World Life Library produces some of the best books with regards to ceteceans. This book is no exception. Expertly written by Dr Phil Clapham, its a vivid potrayal of one of earth's most beautiful and yet mysterious marine mammal's, the humpback whale. Great book packed with excellent pictures.

Format: Paperback
Humpback Whales (1996) is one of the first books on cetaceans produced for the World Life Library series by Voyageur Press. It is seventy-two pages of large font, with half of the pages being color photographs (many taking up entire pages). Phil Clapham, who has been studying humpbacks for years, introduces you to cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), describes the physical attributes of humpbacks, and details their distribution and migration, summer feeding, winter breeding, the life of one particular humpback (a female named Salt), and finally talks about their conservation (which mainly deals with whaling). The book also includes humpback whale facts, recommended reading, and a biographical note on the author, but lacks an index. Despite this last omission, it is still a very good introduction to undoubtedly the most acrobatic of rorquals.

You won't get a scientific or intellectual review from me on this book. uh uh. We sailed out to Stellwagen Bank and encountered so many humpback whales... and while we were in our own little sailboat! What a thrill. After doing this a couple of times, I sought out some books on humpbacks to keep onboard. This is one of my favorites. Majestic, beautiful animals. Surreal experience... and it's nice to have a book that brings me back to those magical moments. (sigh) Wow.
