Product Description

Review

10/10. I prefer a lighter-toned Sandman, but Diana Montague cannot be faulted vocally or for her gentle singing, and Sarah Tynan's Dew Fairy is lovely. Rosalind Plowright's Mother is strong (she might have made a good Witch) and Robert Hayward sings the Father's music brightly (Mackerras leads his entrance "Tra-la-la-las" nice and quickly). Orchestra and chorus are superb. This set is a pleasure--the ideal Hansel in English, and perhaps in any language. -- ClassicsToday.com, Robert Levine, June 2008

The best English-language Hansel and Gretel on CD is Chandos's 2007 release, which features veteran Hansel enthusiast Charles Mackerras pacing the brother-and-sister act of Jennifer Larmore and Rebecca Evans. Larmore's Hansel is joined by Ruth Ziesak's Gretel in Donald Runnicles's engaging 1994 German-language performance (Teldec). Herbert von Karajan's star-studded 1953 recording (EMI) still glows, thanks to the magic teamwork of its two Elisabeths -- Grümmer (Hänsel) and Schwarzkopf (Gretel). -- Opera News, January 2010

Having seen this live with Larmore and Upshaw (in the utterly charming and now foresaken Met production) conducted by Mackerras in 2001, it's no surprise that the Chandos CD is a complete treat! The music here is just simply divine and the great Mackerras is the main reason for this. Larmore and Evans totally get it right (I can't say the same for Coote and Schaefer from the '07 broadcast, who also sang this same translation); they are so musical and eat up every line. Diction is so clear and I love Diana Montague as the Sandman. Chandos? Keep it coming.

I think I own just about every recording of Hansel and Gretel ever made...and this one by far is the topper! Everyone comes together with abolute perfection to bring a total musical and theatrical experience to this charming opera. Especially outstanding are Jennifer Larmore and Rebecca Evans as Hansel and Gretel. They obviously immersed themselves totally in the roles and convey it beautifully to the listener. I'm not familier with Jane Henschel as a singer, but her Witch is awesome! Just the right touch of comic and menacing qualities. Charles Mackerras' conducting and the beautiful playing by The Philharmonia provide the cream on the top. I must also mention that this recording has some wonderful sound effects including a spectacular explosion of the witche's oven! By all means grab this recording...and enjoy it!

I bought this CD in preperation for singing in a production of this opera. The cast on this CD is excellent. I highly recommend that you add this one to your listening library.

This English-language recording of Hansel and Gretel is the only recording of the Humperdinck opera that I currently own.

This opera has been recorded in English several times. Some fellow posters have highlighted the 1947 Max Rudolf recording with the Metropolitan Opera, which, AFAIK, has not been released on CD so far. The only other English recording I know of is the Avie recoding with Andreas Delfs and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, made at about the same time. There is also an English-language recording done by the Sadler's Wells Opera company conducted by Mario Bernardi. Fortunately EMI released that in its Classics for Pleasure CD series. Of the currently available CD options, this Mackerras version is more spirited with meticulous conducting from Mackerras, superb playing from the Philharmonia and a superb cast.

I know that people have complained that the voices of the singers may be a bit too thick-textured. As such this tends to cloud the diction. I notice this when they sing high notes. However the singers fit their parts very well. I have enjoyed Rebecca Evans's singing, not just on Mackerras's Gilbert & Sullivan opera recordings. She makes an excellent, spirited and proactive Gretel and is well-partnered by Jennifer Larmore as Hansel. I absolutely love Jane Henschel as the Witch. She offers a biting, acerbic, malicious portrayal of this villain from the moment she first hears the children nibbling at the gingerbread house.
