Book Description

October 16, 2008 3 and upP and up
Humpty Dumpty used to love climbing, but after his big fall his confidence is shattered. The doctor can fix his shell, but how will he get his nerve back? When one of the King?s horses gets stuck on a cliff, Humpty has a chance to show the world what a resilient egg he can be.

Dave Horowitz creates a wholly original tale and cleverly mixes in lots of beloved nursery rhyme characters in a story that celebrates his love of climbing.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–2—In this skewed extension of the nursery rhyme, Humpty is a climbing enthusiast who gives up his hobby after a "great fall." His doctor admonishes him to be more careful: "for Pete's sake, you're an egg!" Depressed, Humpty sits around the house in his underwear until he unexpectedly finds himself in a position to rescue one of the king's horses from a mountain ledge. Successful and invigorated, he resumes his favorite activity, but with less risk-a postscript informs readers that he now uses safety equipment. Horowitz combines short sentences with Mother Goose rhyme patterns and includes not only characters from Humpty's story, but also others that children should know well: the Dish and the Spoon, the little laughing dog, Miss Muffett's spider. The cartoon art is funny but uneven—while Humpty's expressions nicely evoke the poor egg's mood, the backgrounds look a little slapdash. The result is a lightweight but charming addition to the popular subgenre of "fractured" nursery stories and fairy tales.—Lisa Egly Lehmuller, St. Patrick's Catholic School, Charlotte, NC

From Booklist

After his fall, Humpty Dumpty is depressed and refuses to climb a single wall. All the King’s Men make fun of him as he sits slumped in his underwear watching TV, too dejected to move. Then Spider comes along and frightens Humpty Dumpty out of the house (while he is still in his underwear). He ends up back at the wall, which he climbs again to perform a heroic rescue (“What a brave egg!”). Illustrated with big, clear, line-and-watercolor cartoons, Horowitz’s simple rhyming text is both a parody of nursery rhymes and a fun story. Children will enjoy the puns and the play with the Mother Goose verses that they know, especially the appearance of familiar characters, such as the Little Dog that laughs at poor Humpty Dumpty and the Dish who runs away with the Spoon. Even the final triumph includes a twist: Humpty Dumpty vows to always climb with the proper safety equipment—and his pants—in the future. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Hazel Rochman

More About the Author

My name is Dave Horowitz. I grew up in Smithtown, New York in the 1970s. Instead of paying attention in school I drew pictures of my teachers. Then I went to a famous art college in Rhode Island and studied coloring.

In 1992 I graduated and went to Oregon to play drums and drink coffee. Then I moved to New York City and worked next door to the Twin Towers. Then I learned how to climb rocks and got fired.

Then I climbed rocks.

I moved up to the Hudson Valley and then to California and then to New Hampshire and then back to the Hudson Valley. Then I got a job as a "professional" rock climber. Then I got too old for that.

I still live in the Hudson Valley where I write and illustrate picture books. So far so good...

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny update on old story, April 6, 2009
This review is from: Humpty Dumpty Climbs Again (Hardcover)
Bought this for my 3 and 5 yr old boy - they love it. The image of Humpty sitting in his lounge chair in his underwear seems to have been their particular favorite but they like the whole story very much. The underlying themes of depression, crisis in self-confidence, service, and resurrection are somewhat over their heads - but the humorous side comments embedded in each page are appreciated by child and adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hillarious Humpty Dumpty is a great climber!, May 17, 2009
This review is from: Humpty Dumpty Climbs Again (Hardcover)
Little did we know but.....Humpty Dumpty was a climber! He climbed lots of mountains and walls and has pictures on his walls at home and on both inside the cover!

But then there was that fateful fall that we all know about. One smart horse decides to call the local doctor and he was able to put Humpty together again and told him that he needed to be careful, after all he was an egg! So, Humpty decides to pay it safe and hangs out at home sulking and eating potato chips. Humpty's friend the Dish comes by to visit Humpty and finds in still in front of the TV and in his underwear. Dish gives up and runs off with his pal the spoon! There sat Humpty when a spider came down right on his head and scared him out the door. Humpty went walking and you wouldn't believe it but a dog even laughed at him! So on he went drawn to the mountains. And there he found two guards, climbing gear and the kings favorite horse is stuck on a cliff! As the guards thought their goose was cooked Humpty in his underwear began to climb the mountain and got to the horse and got the horse down. Humpty got back up onto that wall and continued to climb walls and mountains.... but always with the proper gear and pants!

Love this book and it's funny illustrations and thought bubbles. And also other nursery rhythms.
