I first read this book 17 years ago and was so captivated that I could not put it down.
The reason I didn't rate the book higher was because I felt that Victor Hugo got too involved in details that were not particularly relevant.
The story is tragic and maddening, but I really enjoyed the characters and their very realistic motivations for the ways they acted.
