Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a gorgeous "visual sourcebook" with 550 excellent photographs by Fell, illustrating "ways to use perennials creatively in different climatic conditions and topographical situations . . . for American gardens." Unlike the numerous books (e.g., Ruth Clausen's Perennials for American Gardens , Random, 1989) that offer only alphabetical lists of perennials, this collection of photos and their captions illustrate ideas such as color harmony, seasonal color, lawn edges, slope plantings, water conservation, and much more. A unique and very useful approach; recommended for all public libraries with a gardening clientele.

From Booklist

In this stunning book, with 550 color photographs, Fell and Heath provide information on soil preparation, planting, propagation, dividing, and pest control of bulbs, ferns, grasses, herbs, vines, ground covers, shrubs, and what they call "true" perennials. A chapter on regional differences divides the plants into hardy, tender, cool season, warm season, the Northeast, the Midwest, the South, the Southwest and California, and the Pacific Northwest. There are chapters on seasonal changes and designing with perennials. The final chapter, devoted to perennials of distinction, lists 19 species that include such common plants as mums, iris, hostas, lilies, peonies, poppies, and tulips. George Cohen

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, short on words, June 15, 1999

This review is from: Five Hundred Fifty Perennial Garden Ideas: A Comprehensive Visual Sourcebook for Beautiful Gardens Year After Year (Hardcover)
The pictures in this book are truly beautiful. However, those pictures don't come with details such as exactly what plants and how many of each are in each design. This is a great book to look through to get a sense of what _type_ of garden appeals to you, but don't look to it for help in actually designing your own beds and borders.
