Book Description

June 15, 2010
"This is what a comic drawn by Dali would look like!" - Gary Hornberger, Razorcake "Genuinely creepy. Like early David Lynch, like 'Eraserhead.' Goldfarb needs help." - Shannon Wheeler, Too Much Coffee Man Goldfarb's acclaimed comic series, A Hundred Horrible Sorrows of Ogner Stump, is a magical and weird journey into the horrors of everyday life. Join Ogner Stump and his amorphous companion Slub Glub as they encounter demonic hot rods, voodoo tentacles, swamp witches, psychopathic surgeons, nightmarish landlords, door-to-door coffin salesmen, and the Green Fairy. From ritual human sacrifice to the moon's anus, they find despair, misery, and wonder in nearly everything. There is a moral lesson to be learned in each story. There must be. Andrew Goldfarb's surreal vision is one of shadowy desperadoes and haunted love affairs, all set within a darkly antique universe. Sure to delight fans of Terry Gilliam, Harvey Pekar, and Frank Zappa.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smart, Despairing Humor; Wonderfully odd art! August 19, 2010
Format:Paperback
I'm just in the process of trying to "get back into" comics, and so I found this book to be a natural place to start. I've already read a lot of Eraserhead Press titles, and enjoy Bizarro fiction. So why not enjoy a Bizarro comic?

A HUNDRED HORRIBLE SORROWS...is more of a comic strip collection (connected loosely by the thread that each strip focuses on a particular "sorrow") than a graphic novel. But for my money, that makes it all the more enjoyable. I don't have to focus on learning a huge amount of backstory. I just get to enjoy the ride.

There's some amusing satire of corporate America and religion to be found here; but mostly it's just a nice piece of smart, oddball brain candy. I found this tour of poor Ogner's miseries to actually be relaxing. And even though I had "things to do", I found myself reading "just one more page" and being unable to stop. If that's not a sign of effective entertainment, then I don't know what is.

I have really been enjoying Goldfarb's writing -- in addition to the art. He has a very original way of thinking and looking at the world. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hundred Awesome comics January 8, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I don't read comics, but I really dig that black and white creepy 50s/60s style of horror and this collection was perfect to satisfy my thirst for more twlight zone, adams family, munsters vibe. The drawings are great, the dialogue sometimes minimal and sometimes more involved but it always works out. Ogner Stump starts out the collection solo and then meets slub glub and they share the page in wacky adventures. I already ordered Slub Glub in the weird world of the weeping willows and will be ordering everything else by A. Goldfarb
