5.0 out of 5 stars A real gift, April 20, 2000
This review is from: Hundred Lies (Audio CD)
I love this album, and I recommend it to anyone who likes heartfelt, soulful country/blues style music. Malcolm Holcombe has a rare gift, and for the five weeks since I got this CD, respect has kept me from taking it out of the stereo for long. It's been passed around some, and sorely missed while it was gone. I did not write the review below, (which is under my name, somehow) but I agree that Malcolm is a generous soul with a wide open heart. His music is passionate, and brings out something words can't touch -- and I couldn't adequately review this record if I tried, since I am by no means impartial. I like it too deeply. "Far Cry From Here" and "Only for You" are beautiful and painful... "Homeland" and "Back on the Edge of Town" have more muscle and behind them, making your foot a little heavier on the gas pedal. I'm still trying to figure out the harmony to "Dressed in White" -- I hope you like this album as much as I do. I wish there were more of Mr. Holcombe's records available... I'm wearing out what I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rare Gem, January 28, 2000
This review is from: Hundred Lies (Audio CD)
Malcolm Holcombe's album "A Hundred Lies" is one of the most memorable recordings I've ever heard. His unique songs have a way of evading classification, but two fellow singer/songwriters I keep coming up with are Charley Patton & David Olney. He definitely has Olney's flair for creating a poetic/aural landscape in his lyrics. As for his actual muscianship, his unique phrasing,I really can't think of anyone that's struck me so since I first heard Charley Patton. And above & beyond even all this,is his very old, knowing soul that just can't help seeping out of his guitar & his voice.Closest comparison I can come up with would be Townes Van Zandt. Do yourselves a favor & purchase this album.I can't even imagine someone not being entirely satisfied with it.Thank God for Malcolm Holcombe!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your seats, Malcomb Holcombe will blow you away!, February 18, 2000

If you like singer/songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark with a touch of Dave Alvin thrown in for good measure, then you're going to love this performer. Before I listened to his songs the first time I was told to put on the headsets and lay back. It's a good thing I did! Mr. Holcombe's music penetrates and drives deep into your musical soul. Listen to it, it's good for you! This is music that makes a difference, and we're fortunate to finally have it available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Soul Intensity....Absolute!, August 15, 2000
By
This review is from: Hundred Lies (Audio CD)
This c.d. is pure heart&soul, passionate poetry of depth. I treasure Malcom Holcombe as a rare gift of light streaming through his lyrics and strings. This is as real as you get. No B.S. here! It is true expression and not simply for pleasin' the public in general. This is a must have and if you get a chance to see him perform...don't miss it, but don't expect some fancy dude trying to impress you with clothes and glamour, because that ain't what he's about. The Light is his clothing and his music penetrates ones heart to the core.True poetry in motion! Give us some more Malcom and don't change for no one! I Love You.

5.0 out of 5 stars Malcolm Holcombe astonishes, November 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hundred Lies (Audio CD)
Holcombe is a gravel-voiced poet -- a mix of Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt, yet no one can say he's an imitation. Holcombe is the real deal. Guaranteed to astonish. Any one who discovers his music is indeed blessed.

You must see Malcolm Live to really appreciate him. He plays a lot of small venues like the Grey Eagle in Ashville, NC. He has an excellent website. Some of his YouTube stuff is very good. This CD is amazing! I love every track on it but my favorite is Dressed in White and Emma Jean. One of the most original artists I have heard and his songwriting is totally amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Unique, Very Talented Man, October 24, 2007
By
This review is from: Hundred Lies (Audio CD)
The first I heard of him was on TV on Tennessee Saturday Night. I enjoyed seeing him perform very much. He sang some very unique songs. His voice sounds rough and nothing like anything I've heard before. He's a great guitar player. His songs seem to all be original. I'd pay money to see this man perform (and I plan to in a few days). He plays really well.

This is a nice CD. I like it.
