On the minus side:
-It's too short (only 9 songs) -Sound, although very good, only in 2ch DD (no DTS nor 2+3 DD) On the plus side: -Performances couldn't be better, as you'd expect from these musicians -Image quality is perfect and the cameras are always where they should be. (You don't miss a bit of the solos) -And the best technical feature in my opinion, you can play the entire show with the interviews in-between the songs or play it separately, only the interviews or just the songs without the interviews. Well done! And on the super-plus side: - It's Alison Krauss singing !

I collect and own 100's of music DVD's, and nearly all music HD-DVD's and music Blu-ray's yet released, which I play back with very resolving gear in my home theater. I bought this because Alison is tops by any measure. I knew the music would be wonderful, but I was surprised to find the recording quality itself to be so outstanding. Very dynamic with excellent sound stage and dimension. The video is excellent too, as good it gets short of hi-definition.
Now if we could just have a blu-ray concert of Alison and Union Station . . .

Great Gordon Lightfoot Song,

Wonderfully performed and recorded by Alison Krauss and Union Station at the fabulous Tracking Room Studios in Nashville. This kind of music is where her natural, golden voice really shines. And, isn't that an uncredited Gordon Lightfoot on guitar to the front left of Alison Krauss?

The two guitar players are Ron Block (the first one on the DVD and a Union Station member) and the legendary Tony Rice playing his Clarence White Martin D-28.
This is one hell of a talented group of musicians behind Allison.

Having become a Krauss fan by listening to the amazing live Louisville album, I found this a slight let-down.
Why? Well, first of all, it has to be said that Alison Krauss is and remains extraordinary; the beauty and quality of that voice are really something else. She is joined by members of Union Station and various other musicians. There are some really great tracks here. If "Sawing on the strings" doesn't get your feet tapping, have the man screw the lid down right away. My main problem is that there is rather short measure here, only 9 tracks (the identically-named CD has rather more, although the other tracks (e.g. with the Chieftains) were probably recorded at a different place and time). Secondly, not even the brilliance of Ms. Krauss and Union Station can compensate for the lack of brilliance of some of the partners. I found both the James Taylor and John Waite efforts particularly poor. I found the various interviews a bit painful, with everyone saying how wonderful everyone else was and how they sacrificed to each other's effigies every night. We would have been better off with more singing and playing - an instrumental number showing off Ms. Krauss's fiddle-playing skills would have been good. Nevertheless, in spite of these minor reservations, still worth having.

The only thing wrong with Alison Krauss is that she is not prolific enough with her artistry. Her amazing voice is her art, of course. She should make more CDs, and more DVDs of her concerts.
There are so many styles and voices out there, but there is only one Alison Krauss! Her haunting melodies stay with you into the night. You never forget them. Her guests were wonderful on this DVD. Especially James Taylor!

Great DVD. The only problem I have with it is that the sound is only in stereo, not surround.

I've been listening to Allison Krauss for years.... she has a wonderfully soothing voice. This dvd has Brad Paisley, James Taylor, and John Waite singing duets with Allison, plus Tony Rice playing guitar on a few songs and the amazing Union Station. I highly recommend .... I've listened and watched many times... it's like having a front row seat in the recording studio minus all the stops and starts.... you just get to watch and listen to the awesome finished product.

I don't know which is more beautiful on this DVD: Alison Krauss or her voice. This sweetheart of the bluegrass scene was never more lovely, and her vocals are truly as angelic as her face. My only complaint is that it is about four hours too short and does not have the full music video of her singing the Waite and Paisley duets that clips are shown of in the interviews section. Buy it and enjoy it over and over.

Here's a bonus for all of the Alison Krauss fans out there, this DVD is approximately 14 minutes longer than the original television broadcast.
It is pure music perfection, outstanding musicians, as well as the silky smooth voice of Alison Krauss. A must for fans of AKUS ! |
