Product Description

The Growlers are back with a new album of sunburned, psychedelic beach goth! Since 2010 s Hot Tropics, the band has toured relentlessly, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, and even Rock In Rio but they continue to stay true to their roots with a distinctly DIY approach. Their songwriting is in top form, and this lo-fi garage band delivers some seriously catchy tunes.

Review

This brilliant work showcases The Growlers in their fullest stride, like fancy new boots that make you feel mature and confident. --LA Record

Their retro vibe isn t fetishized nostalgia it s dumpster-diving freegan collage: pitchy organ and plunky, country-western bass are punctuated by faux-dub echoes that hang like tapestries in a chill-bro den. --Spin

A spazzed-out, hopped-up, sweaty set of pure fun. --L.A. Weekly

I just can't get over this album. Lyrically, the guy has this back-woodsy wisdom that is very witty, like some sort of a trailer trash poet. He's got loads of funny, clever metaphors that blend perfect with the music. The music itself is inventive, with surprising melodies and rhythms. Every song is a highlight.
"Row" in particular just blows me away. His words convey all the hope, uncertainty, fear, and insanity that I could picture while being out on the water.
I'm no music expert but this is an absolute masterpiece.

After having already purchased and listened to their "Beach Goth" cassette from the Burger Records (.org) store I decided to finally give their latest release "Hung At Heart" a listen. After all, the burger cassette contains 16 tracks that are primarily demos from this album. Now for the good part. Demos are demos, they don't usually contain the final product of a song. Perhaps a demo EP or demo album can contain songs that are as close to the final product as possible, but when an album is finalized it is given the ability to be fully realized; it transpires. When at last I purchased the album, I began to hear all of the progress the band had made from the get-go (per-track). For example, on track one titled: "Someday" (which is track 6 on the demo cassette) what a way to start an album! This album is especially recommended to you if you are in to Lo-Fi or even Surf rock at all. If you've heard or read anywhere that they use a whole lot of reverb, or a variation of effects on vocals, you understood correctly. Then there is track four: "One Million Lovers", in the latest version off of this very album you've got a wonderfully-flow guitar riff that kicks in at 1:51 and comes back in at the tail end of the song, it just wraps around the last 25 seconds of the song and promotes a pleasant conclusion. The remaining 11 tracks are also all-so wonderful, and Brooks Nielsen's voice is not only complemented-by, but complements all of the other musicians instruments with a very refreshingly unique voice and vocal approach. Thus allowing harmony to be felt from track to track. I can't even tell you how many times I've caught myself singing "Pet Shop Eyes" to myself just because of how interestingly fun it is to sing, not to mention how it gets stuck in my head.Read more ›

Literally one of the best albums of all time. Amazingly different, diverse and honest. Growlers are an amazing band and this album is a shining example of music at its finest. Worth the investment in all formats. A serious recommendation from a serious audophile.

The Growlers had already perfected their surf-infected psych sound on their last full-length, 2010's 'Hot Tropics,' a surprisingly original album considering the fact that plenty of bands have blended psych and surf in the past. But the dark, eerie atmosphere and uniquely clever lyrical style that they'd honed over the years on a myriad of LPs and EPs--mostly self-released--separated the band from the pack. 'Hung at Heart,' their first full album since 2010, separates them even further.

This album retains the overall feel of their earlier albums, but adds a healthy dose of 50's crooner music and girl groups to the mix, and when combined with Brooks Nielson's oddly seductive, whiskey-soaked vocals, makes for a captivating listen, especially on songs like the infectious surf-rock of lead track "Someday," the Frankie Avalon on hallucinogens vibe of "Naked Kids," the haunting, swirling organ-infused "One Million Lovers," and the tropical/jazz combo of "Burden of the Captain."

The dark-yet-romantic 50's melodies throughout the album are nearly impossible to not to get sucked in by, with jazzy slide guitar and dreamy organ providing some tripped-out background atmosphere, resulting in an album that's catchy and melodic yet capable of transporting the listener to a dreamy state of bliss.

'Hung at Heart' does start to fizzle out slightly near the end, imo, but overall it's nearly 50 minutes of top-notch psych music, psych music that will take the listener to a weird alternate dimension late '50s, one in which the Summer of Love arrived a decade early. The Growlers may not be reinventing the wheel here, but there's no denying they've got their own unique thing going here. And it's pretty hard to resist.

The Growlers.... Oh the Growlers...

I have been following them since their Greatest s***s album and was super excited to listen to Hung at Heart, mainly because I was expecting something huge, and boy was I right! Hung at Heart is a mixture of their usual 60's Doors-ish, beachy style that's all wrapped around the feeling of being in a sequence of dreams within each track. I downloaded this album as soon as it leaked and instantly couldn't get enough of it, so I had to purchase the vinyl to add to my growing collection. That's exactly what I did and not even a week later I was able to place the needle of my record player on this fine album. After doing so, I fell in love with the album all over again! It felt even more rigid and raw than it had ever sounded, like they were writing this album specifically to be released on vinyl. I've listened to this album so many times now that I have come to the realization that it is very much so a concept album about the relationship between a couple that have known each other since they were little and their experience throughout their life as well as the relationship with one another. Simply magnificent! I would recommend this album to anyone, especially to those who still collects vinyl or even those who wish to start.
