These two volumes of poetry are the 1992 co-winners of the Edwin Ford Piper Poetry Award. The poems in Haskins's Hunger are spare and simple, with an almost "old world" feel about them. Ranging broadly, they touch on motherhood, art, nature, and death. Yet though they are well crafted and move smoothly from line to line, ultimately they do not entirely satisfy. Despite their range and depth of content, the poems seem light, almost empty of any of the weight they promise. Soniat's A Shared Life is a much richer collection. Though these poems are also straightforward in tone, there is the sense that underlying them is a willingness to present and engage in some of the complexities and difficulties that come with the territory of the subjects she enters. The writing is eloquent without being elevated: "Today the sun's a simpler silver./ The field is cut,/ the corn laid down./ Crows pick the earth/ plucked to its finest pitch:/ the day after,/ when all is suddenly less./ Nothing can be forgotten." This strong and intelligent collection is well worth acquiring.
