A great Shark read.,

This review is from: Hunger (Paperback)
I was glad to see the author's comment here on his book. I read this about a year before "Deep Blue Sea" came out and was amazed that no credit was given to this book. The story lines are very similar. I'd rate this book right along side Alten's MEG series for suspense, action, and a believable story. I feel it was much more believable than Wilson's Extinct as well. If you can find this book, it's worth picking up.

Highly entertaining read,

I'm a huge fan of shark novels, and on a recent jaunt to a used bookstore I found a copy of this book, so I couldn't wait to get home and read it. Dantz(Rodman Philbrick) writes descriptive passages that makes you feel like your actually there in the Florida Keys. The characters are well-written, the action scenes are tense and the sharks are menacing. The writers of Deep Blue Sea shamelessly pilfered the story elements but one can only hope Hollywood has the insight to give this book its due. I highly recommend it and rank it amongst the greats like Jaws by Peter Benchley and Extinct by Charles Wilson.

WHAT DEEP BLUE SEA COULD HAVE BEEN,
By
This review is from: Hunger (Paperback)
A squad of genetically engineered mako sharks escape from their holding pen and turn the seas red with their insatiable wrath. Sound familiar? Yes, it's the same plot as the acceptable "Deep Blue Sea," but handled years earlier and far more adroitley by novelist William R. Dantz. Dantz's characters breathe with realism and the electric prose makes his mako's jump off the page at you. Solid, unheralded page-turner compares favorably to Peter Benchley's "Jaws" and definitely deserves to be back in print. Marred only slightly by a subtle left-wing subtext. Exciting, colorful thriller with a heart. Recommended to fans of undersea thrillers, suspense stories, or anyone who could use a quick but satisfying read.

AQUA-PHOBES...BEWARY!,

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK THAT SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED!Hey I loved the movie JAWS and I enjoyed Deep Blue Sea. For reading, I love THE TRENCH, MEG, The Beast, and even White Shark. So if you're like me...then make sure you've added HUNGER to your bookshelf. This seems to be the overlooked 'gem' of the man-eating swimming monster genre. I first came across this book in 1993 (while waiting in a movie theatre parking lot to see Lethal Weapon 3...never made the movie). The "super-smart" shark angle is really exciting and the fact that they hunt in a pack makes it even more deadly for all the characters who find themselves more than ankle deep in water. I can't spoil things but lets just say, there's a terrific build-up, nice characterization, and an action-packed finale. If it takes you more than 2 days to finish this book...then you need to take a swim with the sharks. :) Oh yeah, as my friend and I often say...you can't go scuba diving with a camera and not immediately shudder when an incredibly vivid visual scene from this book jumps into your mind! Buy this book...and read it on the safety of the beach. CHOMP!

An awesome read!,

I've probably read this book at least half a dozen times...it's a new spin on the classic "killer shark goes crazy and eats coeds left and right until our hero saves the day and kills it" idea. Don't get me wrong, I love "Jaws", but it's had so many ripoff's it's not even funny anymore. "Hunger"'s got new ideas, new settings, new character-types, and it's just fresh. Not to mention that the writing style is fluid, and highly enjoyable. The best shark-fiction I've ever read; and I'm getting three copies of it from Amazon for my family this christmas.

Inform the people of the movie rip-off: Deep Blue Sea!,

I just wanted to let you and all who want a good tale to read to know that the author's story was raped by Hollywood. The book is good story telling and would have made a better film than the flotsam in the movie theaters now. Well worth the read but not the price of admission.

Well, deep blue sea, copied off of this book.
yes, these are large mako sharks (finally someone had the decency to move away from great whites) so they basically.......... put the intellegence of dolphin, in like six mako sharks. It was good. it wasn't much better than deep blue sea, (a movie i enjoyed) but this was pretty good.

The Beautiful Six Give This Shark Book A Unique Twist,
By
This review is from: Hunger (Paperback)
I am pretty sure that this book was the inspiration for the movie _Deep Blue Sea_. But where the movie's setting is one of isolation, the scope of this novel is much larger. It was quite exciting and even better than I thought it would be. The dolphins were a very neat part of the book, and one that I did not anticipate judging from the book's description. Surprisingly, the book did not make any references to _Jaws_. It was a good book, with ample justice for the villains (except perhaps for the Beautiful Six). It was their voice that fave this book a unique edge and really a rather likable set of "villains." All in all, this book was a very pleasant surprise.

Very good...,

Very good book about six genetically created Mako sharks with intelligence of dolphins, who escape the lab, where they were created, and bring terror to the Florida region. The book has a really good feel and offers some good thrills. The only thing taking away the additional 5th star is the ending where the female character is just plain stupid - she would rather risk the life of her husband and herself to save dolphins while six huge sharks are coming for them: absolutely stupid and not realistic at all. Otherwise, it's very good.
