-- Table of Poems from Poem Finder®

Hunger's Table is difficult to categorize: at once a poetry collection and social observation piece, it presents Randall's poems on the topics of women, food and politics; thus doesn't fit neatly into the literary category. Connections between recipes and ethnic insights are drawn here. -- Midwest Book Review

More About the Author

I am a poet, essayist, photographer, feminist and social activist, born in New York City (1936), lived for many years in Mexico, Cuba, and Nicaragua, and returned to the U.S. in 1984. I now live in Albuquerque, New Mexico with my partner of many years, the painter Barbara Byers. I travel widely to read and lecture. Recent books include TO CHANGE THE WORLD: MY YEARS IN CUBA (memoir, with photos), and STONES WITNESS, THEIR BACKS TO THE SEA, and MY TOWN (poetry, with photographs). Soon to be released: AS IF THE EMPTY CHAIR / COMO SI LA SILLA VACIA (poems in tribute to the disappeared of Latin America, in bilingual edition, translations by Leandro Katz and Diego Guerra), FIRST LAUGH (essays), SOMETHING'S WRONG WITH THE CORNFIELDS, and RUINS (poems, with photos). The desert of the U.S. Southwest is my spiritual home, and ancient ruins--here and in other parts of the world--increasingly my greatest source of inspiration. Visit my web page at www.margaretrandall.org for a more detailed biography, curriculum vita, up-to-date information on my books and to view four ever-evolving portfolios of my photographic images, as well as current news about where and when I will be reading my work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious book of poetry, February 29, 2000
This review is from: Hungers Table: Women, Food, and Politics (Paperback)
Hunger's Table continues a theme established by Laura Esqivel in Like Water for Chocolate : the relationship between a women and the food she prepares, serves, and eats. Unlike Esquivel, Randall conveys these parallels through a collection of poems, most of which double as recipes, some for delicious meals, others for life itself.

In the thirty-five poems tucked inside the covers of Hunger's Table, Randall addresses how food is more than nourishment for the body, it is also nourishment for the mind and soul. The quantity and kinds of food eaten are often influenced by various factors and events in our lives--family reunions are celebrated around a bountiful table, a woman depressed about her love life (or lack thereof) may comfort herself with a pint of Ben and Jerry's, etcetera. Taking everyday situations as these, Randall creates a series of powerful, beautiful poetry.
