Editorial Reviews

"Margaret Feinberg is a prophetic voice to our generation. This book will pierce your soul and create a renewed hunger to seek God." ----Mark Batterson, pastor of National Community Church and author of In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day

"Margaret challenges and reminds us of what it truly means to long for God and to really know him. As leaders, we need to be reminded of this, and Margaret hits the target. She's one of the authentic and vital voices for our generation." ----Brad Lomenick, executive director of Catalyst

"Margaret Feinberg's Hungry for God will help you hear God's voice in your everyday life. It is wonderfully prayerful and practical, touching on subjects such as the importance of quality `kairos' moments with God and the diversity of the languages in which he may choose to speak to us. Margaret's usual engaging style combines personal stories with biblical truths and gives practical steps in learning to hear the Father's still, small voice in all its many guises. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone seeking to develop and maintain a healthy spiritual appetite." ----Pete Greig, director of prayer for Alpha International, cofounder of 24-7 Prayer, and author of Red Moon Rising and God on Mute

"Reading Hungry for God is a celebration--engaging my soul and spirit to God's heart through powerfully deep and challenging words from my new friend, Margaret. For you, the reader, this could be an embracing of daily moments, listening to and hearing `the whisper of God.'" ----Esther Burroughs, author, speaker, and founder of Treasures of the Heart Ministry

"Once again, in Margaret Feinberg-style, we see a refreshing look at recognizing God's voice in our everyday life. And we are challenged to act on what we hear. Thank you, Margaret, for your own hunger for God and for sharing your journey with us. You always make us hungrier for him as well!" ----Chris Adams, senior lead women's ministry specialist

"With the candor of a child and the vision of an artist, Margaret Feinberg paints fresh pictures, opening windows so that I can better see, taste, and know the Lover of my soul." ----Dee Brestin, author of The God of All Comfort

"In Hungry for God, Margaret Feinberg whets our appetites for the full feast God has prepared for us. Pull up a chair, pick up a fork and dive in!" ----Elisa Morgan, president of Mission: Momentum and author of She Did What She Could

More About the Author

A self-described "hot mess," Margaret Feinberg is a popular Bible teacher and speaker at churches and leading conferences such as Catalyst, Thrive, and Women of Joy. Her books, including The Organic God, The Sacred Echo, Scouting the Divine, and Wonderstruck and their corresponding Bible studies, have sold nearly one million copies and received critical acclaim and extensive national media coverage from CNN, the Associated Press, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and more.

She was recently named one of 50 women most shaping culture and the church today by Christianity Today, one of the 30 Voices who will help lead the church in the next decade by Charisma magazine and one of the '40 Under 40' who will shape Christian publishing by Christian Retailing magazine. Margaret lives in Morrison, Colorado, with her husband, Leif, and their superpup, Hershey. She believes some of the best days are spent in jammies, laughing, and being silly.

Now that you've read the official bio, here's the kick off your shoes and drink iced tea on the back porch version:

Margaret spends most mornings with her good friends Coffee and God. Without Coffee, mornings would be difficult. Without God, life would be impossible.

After a caffeine and God infusion, you'll often find Margaret (puppy-in-tow) adventuring outdoors--she enjoys hiking, river rafting, and scanning the night sky for the Northern Lights and shooting stars.

She boasts an exceptionally dry sense of humor that she attributes to her Jewish father. Little known secret: He was recently inducted into the Surfer's Hall of Fame, and her mom earned her captain's license for 60-ton ships. They're pretty amazing. You'd like them.

Married to Leif for almost a decade, Margaret's known for losing things like her sunglasses on her head, keys in her hand, or her phone for the 12th time in the same day. Luckily, Hershey hasn't been left anywhere... yet.

For being a writer, friends say she has a surprisingly narrow vocabulary and uses a lot of the same phrases including, "I'm game", "Whahhooo!" and "Oooh! Let's do it."

Always up for an adventure, Margaret is known to drive 50 miles to chase down a food truck and snag Groupons for skydiving on a whim. Some describe her as a bat out of hell behind the wheel. Steer clear. She prefers watching comedies and laughing until her tummy aches over doing sit ups. And if you touch her belly button she gets nauseous. So don't do it.

We all desire intimacy with God and long to hear his voice in a tangible way. This book is about how to hear Him in our everyday lives with Feinberg suggesting that God prefers to speak in a still, small voice - a whisper - through scripture, prayer, the counsel of other people, through circumstances, nature, dreams and visions, and even through books and movies (including secular ones).

I appreciated Feinberg's emphasis on developing a Biblical heart that seeks God first and foremost through scripture. As she says, "If I want to know God's voice, I must spend time reading and studying the Bible. Apart from Scripture, I cannot know God's voice as quickly, clearly, or with as much confidence. Hearing from the Lord requires developing a biblical heart, one that is familiar with God's Word." I also like Feinberg's writing style and reading her book made me feel as if I was having a conversation over coffee. It's a cliche to say she writes from the heart, but she does and the honesty drew me in as a reader.

A few things about the book gave me pause. It delves into contemplative spirituality and that is increasingly a red flag for me because such teaching is often out of "ancient wisdom", man-made tradition with new-age undertones rather than from scripture. The author recommends the practice of lectio divina, a meditative form of praying using single words or phrases from scripture, leading to seeking God in "the silence" that is not taught in anywhere in scripture.

Her frequent use of "the Divine" in reference to God bothered me because people like Oprah and other new-age gurus refer to their vague "higher power" as the Divine so they don't have to acknowledge the one true God.

The book Hungry For God by Margaret Feinberg is a book that inspires me. The book boils down to how to hear from God. She begins on the hunger for God. The longing to know Him. One nugget that really hit home: "God would make a Scripture come alive in my heart and imagination - causing a story or a passage to grab my attention like a colorful billboard on a desolate highway." That was so beautifully done, yet so simple. It was like one of those "duh" moments. Moments you have had, but just didn't put it together. Margaret has a knack of pulling the wool off your eyes with simple but profound knowledge. Sometimes things she wrote I already knew, but somehow I didn't see the light bulb. The light bulbs went off left and right when reading her book.

She discussed kairos moments, which is the illumination that happens when God is speaking to us. That is the best way I describe what she says and that is when our chronos is interrupted by kairos. These are God moments, when He speaks to us and transforms our lives with potential impacts. Margaret unfolds this message in such a clear light that by the time you finish the book, you will have a beacon to know when God speaks to you.

She delves into transforming, from God speaking with us, to being open with readiness to Him and gives keys to opening the language of God. The book in back has special hidden bonus tracks with questions and scriptures.

This is a book that anyone wanting to hear from God and has a hunger to know God more will love. I highly recommend this book!

I enjoyed reading Hungry for God as one woman's account into the depths of her walk with God. She unfolds how God speaks to her in a variety of ways. Margaret shares her heart and her stories in a very readable, enjoyable manner. I often found myself nodding along at times while thinking, I have had experiences that were similar and although there was not much new information presented, sometimes we just need a nudge and a reminder to meet with God and keep Him first. It is clear that the author loves God and wants you to as well.

I would caution people reading Hungry for God to remember that it is one woman's experiences and thoughts. It is a book to encourage you to meet with God, read scripture, and listen for His movement in your life. It is not a Biblical study on how God shows Himself to people in the Bible. In fact, this is mostly about her personal walk (notice her head shot on the cover) with a few scriptures added. Her thoughts and not a lot of Biblical backup which always gives me pause when reading. So, my encouragement to you would be to take what Feinberg writes and match it up with what the Bible says. I hope that if you read Hungry for God it will be the testimony you need to inspire you to sit down with your Bible and spend time getting to know God. You know, to develop a hunger for God!

This book was given to be by Zondervan in exchange for my honest review. There are my thoughts and I was not required to write a positive review.

I met Margaret at a Women's Conference in California two years ago. I was so blown away by her talks and couldn't wait to read all of her books. My small group started "Searching for God" a few weeks ago. Our group is truly growing and opening up. I love the book and the questions are amazing. It makes leading our group so easy and natural. - (Written by Beth Cole)
