5.0 out of 5 stars One Hungry Cat's division practice
My kindergartener loves this book. Although he doesn't entirely understand mathematical "division," he now knows how to "share" something evenly. The storyline is easy to follow, the cat's misadventures are funny, and the illustrations are just goofy enough to interest us. The story uses three instances of division with a tiny permutation each time...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sharing is Caring but Eating is Good Too...
I read this book to my friend's 6 year old son. I read this book to my friend's 6 year old son. He didn't seem as interested in this book as another I had read to him (see my review of Arctic Fives Arrive) but once we got into the story, he seemed to enjoy it. The plot is one of a cat who makes 12 cookies and wants to share with his friends. He begins with 4 cookies for each of his two friends and himself but quickly dashes through a series of yummy mishaps. As another reviewer commented, he did not understand the concept of division but did know what sharing equally meant.
Finally, the cat is able to come to a solution but after that, the friends keep trying to evenly share their treat with the cat (5 pages worth of back and forth chatter) which lost my kid's attention. However, I was able to regain it by bringing out 12 real cookies that I had brought with me and we did a couple of the activities in the back before getting a glass of milk.

The storyline is easy to follow, the cat's misadventures are funny, and the illustrations are just goofy enough to interest us. The story uses three instances of division with a tiny permutation each time. The additional exercises in the back move a bit beyond the content of the book, so they help reinforce the learning.

3.0 out of 5 stars One way to learn to Count - J. Smith Pima Community College, March 26, 2005
This review is from: One Hungry Cat (Hello Math Reader. Level 3) (Paperback)
One hungry cat is a fun book that would really inspire children to learn to count, it has a great theme on learning to share and equally divide things up. I can think of several manipulatives that could be used to get this lesson across. This book inspires creative thinking in using various manipulatives. This is a great 1st and 2nd grade book to use for helping children in counting.
