Sharing is Caring but Eating is Good Too...,
By A. Mack "Pima Student" (Tucson, Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Hungry Cat (Hello Reader! Math Level 3) (Library Binding)
I read this book to my friend's 6 year old son. He didn't seem as interested in this book as another I had read to him (see my review of Arctic Fives Arrive) but once we got into the story, he seemed to enjoy it. The plot is one of a cat who makes 12 cookies and wants to share with his friends. He begins with 4 cookies for each of his two friends and himself but quickly dashes through a series of yummy mishaps. As another reviewer commented, he did not understand the concept of division but did know what sharing equally meant. Finally, the cat is able to come to a solution but after that, the friends keep trying to evenly share their treat with the cat (5 pages worth of back and forth chatter) which lost my kid's attention. However, I was able to regain it by bringing out 12 real cookies that I had brought with me and we did a couple of the activities in the back before getting a glass of milk.

One Hungry Cat's division practice,
By
This review is from: One Hungry Cat (Hello Reader! Math Level 3) (Paperback)
My kindergartener loves this book. Although he doesn't entirely understand mathematical "division," he now knows how to "share" something evenly. The storyline is easy to follow, the cat's misadventures are funny, and the illustrations are just goofy enough to interest us. The story uses three instances of division with a tiny permutation each time. The additional exercises in the back move a bit beyond the content of the book, so they help reinforce the learning.
