Why Out of Print?,
This review is from: Hungry Thing (Textbook Binding)
I am so disappointed that "The Hungry Thing" series is out of print. As an early childhood professional, I used it all the time to develop "phonemic awareness" with little folks. They had such a great time guessing the foods & making up some new ones for the character. My old copies are threadbare; I would love some "fresh" ones.

Absolutely the best,
By Tom Adams (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Hungry Thing (Paperback)
This book is absolutely the best childrens book. I have had my name on a list at another book store for two years and they kept telling me it was out of print. I decided to look here and voila I see it. I am ordering eight copies to give to each of my grown children (and one for grandpa to keep for when the grandchildren come to visit) so they can read it to their children.

Great read - aloud for the not - yet - ready - to - read.,

The hungry thing comes into town with a sign that says "Feed Me." The problem is that he wants tickles and no one can figure out what to offer him until one little boy says that 'tickles' sound like 'pickles' to him. As a first grade teacher I read "The Hungry Thing" several times during the year. We then play around with sounds in other words. This helps develop phonemic awareness (awareness of the individual sounds in a word), an essential skill for beginning readers

Wonderful Book!,

This was a favorite when I was young. I'm so glad to see it is still in print so I can share it with my kids. I can't recommend it highly enough.

A favorite from my childhood,

This is one of the few books I distinctly remember from my childhood. I remember running around the house yelling "Feed me! I'm the Hungry Thing!" Now, more than 30 years later, I'm pleased to see the book is still in print, because I want to read it to my 4-month-old son. It's a great book for all ages.

One of our all-time family favorites!,

Our kids adored "The Hungry Thing" and many years later we still quote from it, "Shmancakes sound like..." Now it's our grandchildren who want to hear about this endearing hungry creature with his sign that says "Feed me," and his wildly varied, mispronounced and mysterious cravings. Read it aloud with lots of emphasis and enthusiasm, and soon young listeners will recite the whole thing with you.

A great choice for kids who like to rhyme and be silly.,
This review is from: The Hungry Thing (Paperback)
This was one of the first books I could read by myself, back in the '70s. I am now a school librarian and a parent, and this book is still a big hit with the kindergarten and first grade crowd. They laugh out loud and LOVE that they are smarter than the assembled townspeople. Our school's ancient copies have been borrowed to the point that the covers are worn and the pages are falling out. Time to purchase replacements!

HUNGRY THING,
By
This review is from: The Hungry Thing (Paperback)
THE HUNGRY THING SHOWS UP IN A VILLAGE & MISPRONOUNCES EVERYTHING HE WANTS TO EAT, SO THE VILLAGERS HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HE WANTS. I REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK, BUT DIDN'T THINK OUR TODDLER WOULD BE INTERESTED IN IT RIGHT NOW, BUT ON THE CONTRARY, IT'S REQUESTED ALOT.

This book was read to me when I was a child & I loved it. It is out of print, so I oculd only find it from used sellers, but it is wonderful. My 6 y.o son loves it. A Hungry Thing comes to town and demads to be fed, but he says funniy things like: "Boop & smackers," "tickles" etc. T^he adult townspeople cannot figure out what the Hungry Things is talking about, but a little boy does "soup & crackers", "pickles", etc. The town successfully feeds the Hungry Things and all ends well. Lovely story.
