I have been a fan of rock music since 1988 when i first heard Def Leppard and since then i have got an extensive collection which includes both XYZ releases. The first cd which is self titled is a very good effort easily bettering some of todays bands but with the album Hungry they took it a step further and rocked it up some more kicking off with the hard hitting Face Down In The Gutter. The 3rd song Fire And Water is a cover version which i believe they really did justice to. The rest of the cd never lets up with song after song of pure 80's/90's feel good hard rock that pounds the senses, great vocals fantastic guitars and a rhythm section that delivers a sturdy base from start to finish. If you want something from the past to show you how it should be done then i highly recommend you buy this cd and you should also get their first aswell.

Man, I wish somebody still made this type of music! Yes, I agree with most reviewers that they have a heavy Dokken style, which is alright by me. Outstanding guitar! If you really dig Lynch Mob's "wicked sensation", then you would probably enjoy this disc as well. This is the stype of stuff that you just cannot listen to without pulling out the old air guitar.

XYZ rocks!!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Hungry (Audio CD)
XYZ was a lesser known pop metal band that came along too late to cash in the 80's metal scene. This was XYZ's second album (1991) which is far better and more lethal than their first. There is no weak material on here and the production is great as well.It has some sizzling guitar riffs and great vocals. The best way to describe XYZ's sound is that it's just like Dokken, but in some ways better. If you like bands like Whitesnake,Slaughter,Skid Row,and of course,Dokken, then don't miss out on this one.Pick it up.You'll be glad you did.

This is a terrific follow up to a first record! The guitars on this are lethal. Face down in the gutter comes on and kicks your ass, so does don't say no. My favorite one is When the night comes down. When I find love is a great ballad. HH boogie has a kind of blues thing going on in it. If you liked the first one, you will love this one, and this band after some time off has some new stuff out there now too, which I have heard some of it, and so far I think it's fairly decent. I tried to see this band about 3 times and it always got messed up can you believe it! But pick up hungry yesterday!

80's Metal At Its Best!!,

These guys are by far a much better band than any of the other "popular" bands of the 80's/90's: Motley Crue, Slaughter, Kix, Tesla, et al, except for maybe Def Leppard and Dokken. These guys should have gotten way more popular than a lot of those other bands that did. Glad I "rediscovered" them.

i think this band was awesome and this album is just as good as their debut album.but by the time this came out that grunge crap was taking over in music, what a sad day for us metal heads.true heavy metal is still out there we just have to look for it.if i had my way metal would be played loud and proud.so raise your horns and bang your head and take a stand to bring metal back to the front of the line !

IVE REVIEWED A LOT OF CDS FROM THE 80S. ESPECIALLY FORGOTTEN OR LITTLE KNOWN CDS SOME RARE OR GETTING THERE. AND OTHERS EITHER OUT OF PRINT OR AGAIN GETTING THERE. THIS IS A CD THAT CAN STAND UP TO ANYTHING FROM THAT TIME PERIOD AND A GREAT DEAL OF THE MUSIC TODAY. HUNGRY SHOWS THAT XYZ HAD THE TALENT IN ALL ASPECTS AND YES SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE REALLY BIG BANDS. THE SELF TITLED FIRST CD IS JUST AS GOOD. I PROMISE IF YOU DONT HAVE THESE IN YOUR COLLECTION YOU ARE MISSING SOME GREAT TUNES AND THE MONEY WILL BE WELL WORTH IT. THEY BOTH GO ALONG WELL WITH LYNCH MOB....WHICH IF YOU DONT KNOW THESE GUYS WELL THERES 2 MORE CDS FOR YOU....LYNCH MOB SELF TITLED AND OF COURSE THE ROCKING " WICKED SENSATION ". THESE 4 CDS ALONG ARE THE SOME OF THE BEST OF THE 80S MUSIC TO BE HAD. IM THE ROCKDOC AND AGAIN I GUARANTEE IT !!!

Solid sophomore release from XYZ,

Do you ever listen to a band and think, how the hell did these guys not blow the roof off the rock world?? Well, XYZ are definitley one of those bands. Along with bands like Wildside, Johnny Crash and Blue Tears, these guys should have been every bit the household name of Poison and Bon Jovi. Sadly, XYZ was lost in the shuffle along with those other great bands, and today only the most hardcore fans of hair-metal music even know who they are.
Hungry doesn't stray far from XYZ's debut albums formula. The melody and guitar riffs are still ass-kicking, and Terry Ilous's voice is still amazing as ever. With Hungry, XYZ did seem to take a little harder edge than previous work, which if your like me, you prefer. Face Down In The Gutter, Whiskey On A Heartache, Don't Say No, Fire And Water and H.H. Boogie are all outstanding songs. The rest of the album is just as solid, and I can't imagine how you wouldn't enjoy this record. I highly recommend buying both XYZ's albums. I can't tell you enough how great both these records are. The guys should have honestly been household names, and I just can't figure out why they were'nt. Go buy this album right now!!

You Can't Beat "Hungry". Period,

This album is one of the three or four masterpieces of the hair metal era. The first album from the band had the same elements with three or four fantastic tunes (Inside Out) but the band was not mature yet. In their second effort, Hungry, they simply destroyed the competitors. Period. This album is phenomenal stuff, music of the rock gods. It is hair metal with balls. It's more heavy metal than hair metal, because the music has so much substance it's incredible. If I think that bands like these did not have the success they deserved because some idiot marketing people in the record companies decided that was time for Grunge, ... I can kill someone. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Marc Diglio did here a guitar work that put him on the map of rock masters forever. In Hungry Diglio put on the table one killer riff after another, and please note, with one of the most fantastic "take no prisoner" rock guitar sound ever heard since EVH!!! His fantasy and creativity in using all the Van Halen licks and tricks in the rhythmn parts and in the solo parts make him one of the two or three most amazing followers of the EVH religion (together with Vito Bratta and few others). The singer is another highlight of the band, but Diglio to me steal the show in Hungry. Listening to him is a never ending lesson in rock guitar! The tunes are unforgettable, catchy, heavy, one gem after another, but please note how the album begins, with, probably the winner of the "World Best Guitar Riff Of Any Era Contest". "Face down in the gutter" a kick in your face with a sound that will shake your walls. "Don't say no" another easy winner, "When the night comes down", "Off to the sun" and "HH Boogie" are my personal favourites, but the album is a gem in its entirely. Buy it, and ... PLAY LOUD!!!! (PS Axe Killer did a fantastic remastering job, Diglio sounds phenomenaaaaal!!! He will kick down the walls of your apartment!!!)

Classic melodic rock - remastered,

I've long since given up trying to figure out why some bands make it and others fail to do so, but you really have to wonder why XYZ never really reached the same level of success as bands like Steelheart or Firehouse. They had a great sound that should have gone over quite well in the late 80s, and yet I don't recall ever hearing their music or seeing any MTV videos back then, and I was a total junkie for this kind of music.
1991's Hungry is the band's second album, and picks up right where their self-titled debut left off. It doesn't stray too far from the typical hair metal sound that was so popular at the time, but two elements of XYZ's style really stand out. The first is singer Terry Ilous, who sounds like a more soulful (and less piercing) Mike Matijevic (of Steelheart). The second is the band's incredible use of melodies. This melodic approach puts XYZ on the same level as bands like Hurricane, Hardline, and Winger, and makes for some seriously catchy melodic rock. When the Night Comes Down and Shake Down the Walls are terrific rock anthems, and are the album's standout tracks, but the rest of the songs are just as impressive. Hungry is hair metal at its finest. If you're still into hair metal and 80's rock, you'd do well to add some XYZ to your collection. NOTE: French reissue label Axe Killer reissued Hungry in 2001 with digitally remastered sound and a bonus studio track called Two Wrongs Can Make a Right. The extra song and improved sound quality make this the best version of Hungry to buy. |
