Grade 4-8-- Deem takes readers on many kinds of treasure hunts, identifying what to look for, where to look, laws governing the return of a find, and scouting techniques. The book is interesting, entertaining, and will make anyone who reads it want to learn more about the art of treasure hunting. Each chapter includes documented experiences. A list for further reading is included. Places where the author did his research and the resources he used are acknowledged. The only flaw is in the illustrations. Many of the children pictured on the cover and in the black-and-white cartoon drawings are very young. More About the Author

James M. Deem is the author of numerous books of nonfiction and fiction, including the 2009 Sibert Honor Book, Bodies from the Ice: Melting glaciers and the recovery of the past.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, with his family when he was eleven. He earned a Bachelor's degree in language arts from the University of Kansas followed by a master's degree and a doctorate in reading education at the University of Michigan. For twenty-seven years, he taught reading and study skills to underprepared college students. He once again lives in Tucson with his wife Susan and now writes fulltime.

His most recent books include the award-winning series: Bodies from the Bog, Bodies from the Ash, and Bodies from the Ice.
