"The boy stared at his world gone mad."--begins the second book of the bestselling 13th Reality series: The Hunt for Dark Infinity. The malicious Reginald Chu has devised a way to infiltrate the minds of people and creatures alike--controlling their thoughts, speech and actions.

New Realitants, Tick, Sophia, and Paul, must find a way to penetrate Chu's destructive creation before he gains control over all the Realities. But they are at the mercy of Chu's test--as they are winked from one reality to another--forced to decode strange messages and battle deadly creatures in order to save their own lives.

From a distance, Master George can provide aid when it's most needed--but even he can't stop the events from unfolding. For he knows that Tick needs to make whatever sacrifice necessary to stop Chu from succeeding.

From the first sentence to the last, Dark Infinity will propel you through fantastic Realities, spin you against another adventure just as you're ready to take a breath, then deposit you in the middle of one of the most clever twists I've read in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, April 10, 2009
This book begins with Tick, Paul, and Sofia getting a message from Master George that the realities are in danger.

He tells them that they need to meet with others to decide what must be done. Instead of going to Master George, as they should have, they are sent to another reality all together. They believe that Master George has sent them on a series of tests in different realities with deadly traps all around them.

Mr. Chu, from the Fourth Reality, is working on a new weapon called Dark Infinity, and Tick is in a race against Mistress Jane to find it first.

Before I started this book I wondered if I should read the first in this series, THE JOURNAL OF CURIOUS LETTERS. I can tell you that although it would help to get to know the characters by reading the first book, it didn't seem necessary. It was very easy for me to figure out what was going on.

I enjoyed this book very much, although it may be a bit long for the younger kids (8-10). THE HUNT FOR DARK INFINITY was well-written with an engaging storyline. I really liked the main characters, and it was enjoyable getting to know them.

I am eagerly awaiting the next story in this series. James Dashner is a gifted storyteller and will definitely keep everyone interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure, March 30, 2009

This book was such an unexpected pleasure to read. Dashner's themes of self-discovery and the power within were expertly deployed. But I must confess that my favorite aspect of this book was the relationship between Tick and his family. As I started to mentally review other books I've enjoyed in this genre, I couldn't come up with a single other book that represented an in-tact, supportive, close-knit family. What a gem! I look forward to reading many more of Dashner's books and having my children read them as well. Excellent!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best so far!!!, March 19, 2009
This is the best sequel to any series I've ever read-and that's a lot of them! James Dashner has outdone himself with this one but wait-there's to be more books and it'll be better than any fan can dream of. Just when you think you have something kind of figured out he switches it up on you and you're like, "WHOA!!!!" Can't wait for the next one-just bummed it's a year away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Two Delivers Non-stop Action!, March 18, 2009
This second book picks up at the end of a boring summer (especially after all the excitement of the first book) with Tick and his new friends waiting to hear from Master George, the head of the Realitants. They are anxious for their next mission. When it comes, of course things go wrong and suddenly, they are off on an adventure that is making no sense to them. It's like they are being tested all over again. What could be going on?

Meanwhile, back at the headquarters, their other friend, Sato, gets sent on his own scary adventure, complete with an amazing, breath-taking chase scene. Then there's Master George who, along with his eclectic group of Realitants, is trying to figure out exactly what's going on because things are all a bit confusing. And then also, we learn much more about the villains, both the new one and the old one.

This book is full of heart-pounding chase scenes, many explosions and destruction galore! There's also lots of riddles to solve, just like in the first book. It's extremely fast-paced with never a slow moment.

3.0 out of 5 stars The creature described in this book are incredible, May 3, 2011
This review is from: The Hunt for Dark Infinity (13th Reality) (Paperback)
Review written by 14 year old girl:

The 13th Reality: the Hunt for Dark Infinity by James Dashner(the author of The Maze Runner), was a wonderful, well written book that I enjoyed reading. It has a fascinating otherworldliness to it and I really enjoyed learning from the experience. The intriguingly different species that James Dashner creates adds a captivating fictional side to the story.

Mistress Jane, who was considered to be the most evil person in the realities, has now been replaced by a new and more dangerous threat that is causing people of every reality to lose their minds. Literally. Reginald Chu is the super genius, bad guy who is causing all this chaos. He is making every one crazy by becoming a voice in every one's head. He must be stopped and it is up to Atticus and his three friends to follow the clues left behind and prevent his evil plans from working. But, because of the power Tick (Atticus' nickname) has in himself and the lack of control he has over it, he is becoming a problem and a threat to every one around him and must be stopped.

I have loved reading The 13th Reality: the hunt for Dark Infinity. It was a wonderfully enjoyable book and James Dashner is a charismatically brilliant writer. Every new kind of creature he describes in these books always astounds me. There was quite a lot of witty banter between Sofia and Paul in this book and sometimes I couldn't help but laugh out loud at some of the arguments. Dashner remains one of my favorite authors.

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes

Would I read it again? No

Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

4.0 out of 5 stars A little more action, a little more intensity, July 29, 2010
By
Geeky Pearl (Oregon, United States) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I read the first book with the kids (ages between 5 and 12) and we were all anxious to get this second installment. It was so much more intense than the first one. It had great plot twists and reveals, but it was almost too intense for me to read aloud. Almost. My kids completely loved it. They were on the edges of their seats practically the whole time; and when we weren't reading it, they were discussing with each other what might happen next. Time to buy the third book - because if I don't, I'm going to have a mutiny on my hands.
