Editorial Reviews

"The Hunt for the Gingerbread Man" is the 4th full-length album from underground Hip Hop personality MF Grimm, an artist with one of the most powerful stories in music. Confined to a wheelchair after an attempt on his life, he went on to play an essential part in the mid 90s independent Hip Hop boom, recording with Bobbito's Fondle'Em label, working closely with MF Doom on the landmark "Operation: Doomsday" album, and starting one of the few totally independent label/distribution companies in NYC Grimm's new album "The Hunt for the Gingerbread Man" is based around the adventures of his criminal alter-ego the Gingerbread Man in the metaphorical world of Candy Land. A fully realised and highly conceptual album, it's also the darkest of his career, and finds one of hip hop's most creative storytellers reaching his full potential. With production by international beatmakers Stricknine (production credits include Thirstin Howl the 3rd & Rack Lo, Tim Dog and more), Prowla (Celph Titled, 7L & Esoteric's "Protocol"), Sammsonite (Thirstin Howl III) and Aksim (Block McCloud, Edgar Allen Floe), the sinister sound suits Grimm's style perfectly, and will be appreciated by fans who have always lauded the darker tracks on his earlier albums. Album advertised in URB and The Source; banners on ughh.com. US national press campaign by Score targeting Hip Hop and alternative music magazines and websites, placing tracks with urban related websites, forum seeding and more. Radio campaign by Trilogy Media targeting college radio nationwide and Hip Hop specialty stations and shows, mix show and CMJ Top 40 Hip Hop panel servicing. "The Hunt for the Gingerbread Man" is released to coincide with Grimm's autobiographical graphic novel Sentences (Vertigo/DC Comics), for which coverage has already been confirmed on ABC NEWS, MTV, NPR, WFMU and in Urb, Village Voice, XXL, The Black World Today, Library Journal, Xlr8r, Hip Hop Connection, Los Angeles Times Book Review, Murder Dog Magazine, New York Magazine, Portland Mercury, Publishers Weekly, Scripps Howard News Service, True, XXL, New York Daily News and Variety.com. Grimm released the first triple CD Hip Hop album of all time, "American Hunger", in 2006 and has made recent appearances on the covers of several magazines (Village Voice, URB) and featured and reviewed in Rap Pages, Elemental, Spin and extensive Internet coverage on major websites (Allhiphop.com, UGHH.com, Hiphopgame.com, Unkut.com, Artofrhyme.com and more). Grimm has previously recorded with artists such as Ill Bill, MF Doom, Kool G Rap, J-Zone, Large Professor, Roc Raida, Akinyele and many more. The album features distinctive painted artwork by Australian graffiti legend Peter Frickman, and comics and an animated series based on the album concept currently in development by Grimm.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars, October 4, 2007
This review is from: The Hunt For the Gingerbread Man (Audio CD)
This is really an amazing album. Its just a bit over 48 mins long so it doesn't drag on and on. Every track on here is great, but my favorite is Half Baked. I love the production and the fact that Grimm is able to stick with the Gingerbread motif the WHOLE WAY THROUGH while still making each song relevant and understandable.

Great lyrics, Great production. This one will be in my rotation for awhile.

There have been some good CD's that dropped this year:

Jesus Price Superstar
Ultimate Victory
Eardrum

I think this one belongs in that class. It might actually be my favorite album to hit this year

Stand out tracks:

Half Baked
The Fox
The Hunt for the Gingerbread Man
Earth

4.0 out of 5 stars Grimm proves he's still one of the most unique MCs in the game, November 23, 2009
This review is from: The Hunt For the Gingerbread Man (Audio CD)
This album was released after the masterful 'American Hunger' so it's not surprising there is a bit of a drop-off from the 60 track epic. Hunt of the Gingerbread Man is first and foremost a concept album. Grimm skillfully tells the story of a gangster gingerbread man (Gingy) while detailing his exploits over the course of the album. The production feels bargain-rate at times, but Grimm has always had the ability to overcome anything with his lyrics and skillful delivery. You get the feeling making this album was cathartic for Percy Carey and that he made this record as much for himself as for fans/sales.

If you're a fan of Grimm this is a must-have, but if you're just getting into this scene maybe try something a little more fan-friendly like Scars and Memories or American Hunger.
