Deer hunting has been a part of Wisconsin's culture from antiquity down to the present day. Native Americans and pioneers hunting for substance. Gradually deer hunting took on an entertainment value as a sport. But even today, deer hunting continues to be a major food resource for a significant number of Wisconsin families. In "On The Hunt: The History of Deer Hunting In Wisconsin", freelance outdoor writer Robert C. Willging lays out a definitive historical survey of deer hunting in the Badger State beginning with the spear-throwing Paleo-Indians of the Upper Midwest, to the sportsmen and women of today with their scoped rifles. "On The Hunt" draws from such divers published historical resources as Wisconsin Conservation Department and Department of Natural Resources archives, hunting magazines, newspaper articles, and anecdotal stories of hunters and deer biologists.
