5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Small Bedrooms
This is the fourth Hunter Low Profile ceiling fan we've purchased for our home. This 42-inch four-blade model is perfect for smaller bedrooms with eight-foot ceilings. 1.0 out of 5 stars Fan does not sit flush on ceiling, not as small as advertised
I purchased this product specifically because of the low profile size for a room with a ceiling height of only 7'6". I am very disappointed-upon installing the fan it does not sit flush against the ceiling (not due to a curved ceiling, rather due to the hanging bar provided with the fan). there is a 1/2-1" gap between the housing the ceiling, and the fan hangs lower...

This review is from: Hunter 23866 Lowprofile III 42-Inch 4 White Plastic Blades Ceiling Fan, White (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is the fourth Hunter Low Profile ceiling fan we've purchased for our home. This 42-inch four-blade model is perfect for smaller bedrooms with eight-foot ceilings. The housing fits nicely on the ceiling where the light fixture was, it doesn't hang down too low, and it's very quiet for sleeping. Hunter suppresses the motor sound by using rubber bumpers between the mounting bracket and ceiling, soft rubber grommets for each blade, and of course a quiet motor. We're very satisfied with this product, and our first two are still quiet after three years.

We love the new Hunter fan. It is very quiet and has the lowest profile of any fan we saw. It is great for low ceilings like ours.

I really wanted a 4 blade white "hugger" ceiling fan... not easy to find. Most ceiling fans are 5 blade in the low-profile-hugger models. This Hunter fan seemed just right for a bedroom/8ft ceiling install. It is safely high enough and looks a bit retro. I'm very happy with the purchase and ease of assembly, provided you read the instructions... really... read the instructions.

The reviews on Amazon were very helpful in selecting this fan. The points people make about the housing not sitting against the ceiling are valid, it actually is about a half inch or less from the ceiling, but this is part of the quietness. There are four rubber bumpers that keep the housing/cover at a particular distance from the ceiling. This is all part of why the fan is so... so... very quiet.

I used a Westinghouse ceiling fan brace (see my other review about that product). The biggest cost for me was the electrician who ran a new electrical line to the ceiling fan, wired to a Lutron 3-speed fan (Specific) wall switch. This provides three speeds from the wall switch, those setting are varied by the three speed settings for the pull chain on the fan... in short, if you want the fan to spin really slow, I recommend you go this route. I'm happy we didn't go with a remote control even though it increased costs.

Amazon shipped quickly and the product arrived safely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Installation design flaw, March 28, 2010

This is a nice ceiling fan, but a design flaw in installation components can complicate its installation. Unless you can cut an 8" hole in your ceiling dry wall and recess the ceiling mounting bracket 1/2" into the drywall you are going to have a 1/2" space between the top of the fan housing and the finished ceiling. This is caused by a poorly designed mounting bracket. The only other way to get around cutting a larger hole in your drywall is to purchase or make a decorative ceiling circle to fill in this 1/2" void between the finished ceiling and the top of the fan housing. I made my own, but that turned a 2 hour job into a 4 day event. Sometimes I wonder if the people who design these products have ever tried installing them. By the way, this fan is advertised as having plastic blades-actually the blades are made of MDF (medium density fiberboard). 4 stars instead of 5 because of the installation difficulties.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great fan at a great price, February 24, 2011

This is a no-frills ceiling fan for smaller rooms. No remote, no fancy chain plugs but it works and is VERY quiet. I did not need to balance the blades at all.

The installation is a little strange. The fan does not come with screws for your electrical box but instead comes with screws to drive up through the wall covering (drywall, plaster, etc.) and into the structure beneath. When I remodelled I installed metal boxes for my wiring mounted between the joists with a 2x4 and 3" wood screws. Luckily for me I was able to drive the screws up through the drywall and into this 2x4 I extended between the joists. For anyone else wanting to use their reinforced box they will need to purchase their own machine screws or hope that the ones that came with their box are long enough to reach through the mounting bracket. Mine were not, however, I was able to use the wood screws included with the fan.

There are four bushings that sit between the bracket and the ceiling that make the bracket feel much more "sturdy" and allows you to tighten the screws quite well to prevent any wobbling or vibration.

The blades install to the decorative arm with "grommets" inserted into holes in the blades. The screws will not tighten all the way down but will instead leave some "wiggle" in the arms and fan blade. I was concerned about this at first but after installing and running the fan at full speed my concerns were unfounded. The fan is sturdy and quiet.

All-in-all this is an excellent product and really fits the bill nicely when you want a flush-mount fan with no light kit. Keep in mind, however, that this fan leaves about 1/2 to 5/8" of space between the ceiling and fan shroud, so if you have a rather large hole you're trying to cover you'll need a ceiling medallion. Thankfully I finished my boxes with no gap in the drywall around them so I did not have the need for a medallion.

If you do have to use the box machine screws to hold your bracket and feel less than comfortable with how secure your bracket is I suggest buying some red Loc-Tite for installing the screws. Apply liberally to the threads on the screws and, once dried, your screws will not back themselves out no matter how much the fan vibrates.

One excellent idea that the manufacturer did was include extra fasteners! If you drop one of the pretty blade mounting screws you will have an extra one. I had an extra blade mounting screw, bushing, and blade to bracket screw in each of my three fan kits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hunter low profile ceiling fan, February 8, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Hunter fan was highly rated among buyers of low profile fans. I bought two (one walnut/antique brass and one white) for installation in two rooms of an addition to my home. While I haven't used them regularly as yet, they installed well, look great, and operate very quietly.

I installed my fan myself and am very pleased with it. The fan operates silently without vibration.
The motor cover does not go flush to the ceiling but I figure that is to prevent noise transmission. That even was not noticeable after the install was complete.

This fan was a great value. It's very nice looking and is the perfect size for the two small bedrooms (11 by 11 and 10 by 14) we installed it in. It has several speeds and is very quiet at all of them. The one challenge is that the recommended installation left a one inch gap between our ceiling and the fan collar. We removed the cushioned spacers and that cut the gap in half, but there is still a gap there. You'd never notice it if you just walked into the room, but it bothered me when I installed it.

I purchased this product specifically because of the low profile size for a room with a ceiling height of only 7'6". I am very disappointed-upon installing the fan it does not sit flush against the ceiling (not due to a curved ceiling, rather due to the hanging bar provided with the fan). there is a 1/2-1" gap between the housing the ceiling, and the fan hangs lower than the advertised 8".
I would not recommend this fan to anyone.
As we took it down right after mounting it I cannot comment on the performance, or noise level.
