I prefer this older model over the new model. This model allows you to turn the lights on and off with the regular wall light switch OR the remote. The new model forces you to use the remote to turn the lights on.

As an earlier reviewer said, I guess some people dont like that this remote's options causes the lights to come on during power outages. While I feel that is a pretty rare instance compared to daily living, ideally they would build in a switch on the remote to allow for both options.

Another complaint from the other review was that, while on vacation a power outage would cause your lights to come on and stay on thereby wasting electricity. This is not true if if you just use the wall switch to turn the power off to the fan before leaving.

I personally prefer to use my wall switch to turn the lights on and off. When I go to bed I like the remote because I can use the remote to turn the lights off from my bed and to change the settings on the fan if I wake up too warm or cold during the night.

Long story short: I called Hunter Support, and after giving the description:

The buttons (0, 1, 2, 3) for the fan control work fine, the buttons for the lights (dim up, dim down) DO NOT.
(They BOTH do the same: turn the light on or off at the LOWEST brightness [actually around 10 volts output, I measured it] No dimming function and no way to turn the light bright)

I was simply told that the receiver was faulty and I needed a new one.

This one I just bought and installed. It was like this since the beginning. Fortunately for me, the seller was a responsible person and took good care of me.

I like the Hunter brand a lot, but I am really thinking hard about trying again to get a new one, because I find a lot of bad reviews about faulty remotes.

Worked perfectly after getting the new battery. Battery was DOA. Otherwise, perfect - performs well. wiring diagram was correct and easy to understand.

Bought this remote from Home Depot for my 2-year-old's room. A week later during a thunderstorm at night, our power went out and when it came back on the light turned on and woke her up. What a terrible design! Not only is this remote going to wake you up at night if the power is interrupted, if you happen to be on vacation and that happens, it's going to waste electricity until you get home. (Yep, I checked the user manual and in the fine print it says that's what it does, so this is the way it's designed--I didn't get a faulty remote.)
