1.0 out of 5 stars Motor leaks oil after 1-2 years and gives you headaches
This is my second Hunter QuietFlo 30401 that the motor leaked and polluted the air after over 1-2 years of use. I purchased the first one brand-new. I replaced the pre-filter on a regular basis as needed before the timer recommended it, and I changed the filter when told to do so by the digital filter life monitor. This was used in a large climate-controlled bedroom...

This is my second QuietFlo programmable air purifier, and was bought to replace a unit purchased over 10 years ago that ran constantly in my bedroom. I have allergies and also have two dogs that sleep in my bedroom! This unit keeps the room smelling fresh and clean and helps keep my allergies under control. I love the programmable function and that fact that I can set fan speeds based on time of day, and then walk away. I also have moderate tinnitus (ringing in ears) and I find the sound of the fan running at night to be soothing and helpful. I love this unit and highly recommend it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Motor leaks oil after 1-2 years and gives you headaches, April 15, 2008
This review is from: Hunter 30401 Quietflo True Hepa Air Purifier for Large Room (Kitchen)
This was used in a large climate-controlled bedroom. The unit is only used during sleeping or when the room was aired out or cleaned.

The unit works great, but the motor hasn't lasted. I started getting headaches while sleeping and eventually I noticed an electrical burning smell. I traced it back to the air cleaner. I called Hunter and they had me cut the power cord and return the cord when they send me a new unit (they asked me to dispose of the defective unit). They replaced the entire unit with a brand new 30401! Great customer service, it was all paid for and I was good to go. Before disposing of the old unit, I opened it up to take a look and oil was leaking out from the motor and it smelled like "electrical burn" smell.

1.5 years later, the replacement unit did the same thing. I hadn't been sleeping well lately, and last night I had a headache, so I smelled the air coming from the unit and it smelled like something burning. I turned it off and waited the next day to take a look at it. The same thing: The oil from the motor is leaking and it smells like it's burning.

So if you are getting headaches - try sleeping with the air cleaner OFF and air out the room! This could be the culprit. The smell isn't noticeable at first but it does effect the air you breath. I also noticed the Hunter label that says "MADE IN TAIWAN". I don't know if this also applies to the motor, but it's too risky to have this replaced and have this happen again. I am stuck with some extra filters but I would rather buy a completely different brand and unit then to risk my health again running this unit while I am sleeping.

This HEPA filter is great. It's super quiet, and the built-in timer is a great way to save power. We also have a previous model which has been going strong for over 6 years, so I expect this will last just as long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still works great after 4 1/2 years, July 1, 2011
This review is from: Hunter 30401 Quietflo True Hepa Air Purifier for Large Room (Kitchen)
I love this air purifier. I have been running this unit 24 hours a day for over four years, and it works just like new. I have it in the bedroom, and on the lowest setting, it emits a faint fan sound that I don't even notice. I don't understand the CONS listed for this unit. The Hepa filter takes about 10 seconds to change, and it's only done once a year. The pre filter is designed to get larger particles such as dust and hair, which is does very well. This pre filter is changed every 2 months or so, and that takes a little more time because you cut them to fit, but takes around five minutes total. When I'm cleaning or shaking out the bedding, I put the unit on the high setting, and I can watch it suck all the dust out of the air. Sure it's not super quiet on the high setting, but it needs that fan power to do a good job. When I leave for work, I set it to the medium setting so it can do more work when I'm away. The medium setting still isn't that loud, and I don't put on low until I'm actually going to sleep again. The digital display tells you when it's time to change filters, and can be reset at that time. Very Easy. I started ordering cheap knock-off filters online about 2 years ago, and they work just as well as the Hunter brand filters. Trust me, I save about $30 each time, and they are very similar to the brand name filters. My apartment has much less dust than it did before I bought this. You can really see for yourself when you change the pre filter. It will have a 1/4 inch thick sheet of dust and hair stuck to it- all of which would be in your home if you didn't use an air cleaner. I also love that the unit is relatively tall and narrow. It fits nicely against a cabinet, unlike my friend's giant round air cleaner that doesn't fit anywhere. Oh, I also use it to dry my clothes- I hang all of my laundry to dry, and just move it over to my drying rack. It circulates the air and helps suck the lint out the air at the same time. My apartment stairwell is a bit musty/smokey (yuk), but when I enter my apartment, it smells clean. Again, I don't know why the list of CONS for this unit say there isn't enough charcoal in the pre filter. That isn't even an issue. I am very particular about purchases for appliances etc. and am extremely happy with this air cleaner.

1.0 out of 5 stars No HEPA Filter, August 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hunter 30401 Quietflo True Hepa Air Purifier for Large Room (Kitchen)
I ordered this purifier form Amazon and it was shipped with out the HEPA filter. I called amazon customer service and they sent out an new unit but it again did not have the all import filter. It states in the product info that this is included. I ended up having to just return both units that where sent because amazon stated they could not send me a filter.

I've been please with this filter so far. I have done any testing to know how effective it's actually been, but I like the programmable features. It's been running constantly, pretty much, since I got it a few months ago and I haven't had any issues so far.

I smoke and have several cats. This works extremely well. I would recommend it to everyone. One of my cats was constantly sneezing and congested. That stopped when I got this. Whenever I hear her sneeze I know it's time to change the filter. (They are costly but it's worth it)

This unit is fairly quiet, and not too ugly (in my opinion). I have it sitting against a wall in my kitchen and looks OK. As for how well it cleans the air, tough to say. Going on consumer research I trust that it's doing its job.
