3.0 out of 5 stars I hope I don't have to return
I just got this unit yesterday from HSN. The first hour I was loving this machine. It appeared to work as expected, recirculating the air and has a variety of settings and modes. Well that didn't last long because for some reason while using the ionizer feature a clicking or popping sound started. Continuously and never stopping. I called the tech support in the manual...

This purifier has all but kept my pet allergy at bay and has collected a large amount of dust/debris/animal hair that's been flying around in my air system. I leave it on all day and night.

The prior review stated that a ring at the base destroyed their carpet. This product is designed to gather in dirty air and spit out fresh air - not all of the dust is going to get pulled in and some WILL collect at the base - but unless you vacuum once per year, this is no problem at all. Just vacuum your carpet regularly.

I have light carpet (Mohawk I think) and it's fine. There is a ring where the unit was sitting, but this is from the base sitting in one spot for a while - much like a table leaves an indent in the carpet that comes up after a time.

This product does NOT get 5 starts because the filters are hard to come by. I have to order mine online since Home Depot / Lowes / Target / WalMart / PriceClub (and derivatives) do not carry it.

I've also seen other sites that say the controls are difficult. It's like a cheap car with automatic transmission from the 80's - 3 speeds and an overdrive (psuedo 4th speed).

Oh - and it comes with a remote - how can you go wrong?

Finally - the price. Amazon's price is ridiculous - Home Depot and Lowes regularly sell these things for $180. Occasionally they have 50% off sales. So, get the filters online, but definitely buy the thing in a store.

I just got this unit yesterday from HSN. The first hour I was loving this machine. It appeared to work as expected, recirculating the air and has a variety of settings and modes. Well that didn't last long because for some reason while using the ionizer feature a clicking or popping sound started. Continuously and never stopping. I called the tech support in the manual and they suggested that I return the unit because there is most likely hair caught in the unit.

Now that really disturbs me. If hair can cause this unit to create an annoying sound as the one it's making then I don't even want it. I mean I was really looking forward to seeing the benefits of an air purifier.

So most likely I will send this unit back and see if they can send me another. But it really is a shame that a unit this size and cost can easily be affected by something as simple as hair.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hunter 30756 PermaLife Tower Air Purifier with 3-Speed Fan, May 20, 2009

1) Tower air purifier is somewhat noisy on its fast setting and a distraction on the "Turbo" setting.
2) Would like to be able to purchase an extra cleanable hepa filter but Hunter makes it difficult to buy. Their website and the product
manual which comes with the unit doesn't even mention the possiblity of buying an extra in case the supplied "lifetime" one is accidently damaged during cleaning or handling.
3) The automatic guage which tells you when to replace the prefilter and the when to clean the main hepa filter works on the accumulated time the unit has been running since the last replacement or cleaning. This may cause you to be late in doing maintaince on the filters if the unit is filtering air that has more particulates per unit/volume than what the air quality engineers designed the unit to treat.

I love Hunter air purifiers because they work!
I now have 5 & I can always find filters.I run then 24/7.
I tried 3 Oreck & 3 Ionic Breeze Quadra & they were crap plus cost a lot more!
You can't go wrong with Hunter!

1.0 out of 5 stars This air purifier damaged my new carpet!, December 10, 2008

This review is from: Hunter 30756 PermaLife Tower Air Purifier with 3-Speed Fan (Kitchen)
The Hunter PermaLife 30756 is a poorly designed product and I absolutely do NOT recommend it. We have had Holmes purifiers in our house for over 12 years to help keep my husband's cat allergy at bay. I decided to upgrade the one in our lviing room to a newer tower model for space and asthetic reasons and purchased the Hunter PermaLife Tower Air Purifier 30756 this past May. I thought the roughly 5 yr life of the filter would offset the cost of the unit and all was well and fine... we were very happy with the performance of the unit. It's a tad noisy on the medium fan speed level and for optimum function you have to vacuum the filter about every 10-14 days (we leave our windows open most of the year so other climates and with or without our 2 cats may differ.)

Last week, we cleared the living room of furniture to have our not quite one-year-old light grey carpeting cleaned and I was shocked to see a brownish ring where the air purifier had been. I do not move all the furniture each time, but vacuum my carpet at least twice a week and had only moved the air purifier less than 6 times since May. I vacuum very late at night, and due to the lack of lighting, I hadn't notice the build-up of damage to the carpet.

I read the entire manual and no where does it mention the vent near the bottom of the unit that I found after discovering the discoloration. My new carpeting looks awful in a very obvious area of the living room. Spot treating and machine cleaning did lighten the stain by about half but you can still see an approx. 8 inch ring. Hunter Company covers itself in the warranty; "they are not responsible for damages caused directly or indirectly" by their product for more than the actual product price. So much for $6000 of special order extra wide carpeting that isn't even paid off yet.

Next time, I'll be sure to inspect near the base for hidden small vents before purchasing a tower air purifier.
