5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a big fan
I'm thrilled with this metal fan from Hunter, all the more so when I compare it to other small- to medium-sized oscillating fans. The construction is sturdier and the appearance is appealing and clean. While not totally silent, the "whispering" motor is not bothersome. Even on the first (of three) speeds, the fan is effective. In short, I'm delighted. Hurray for Hunter.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok. maybe i'm picky
I agree with the other reviewer. it's a nice looking fan, forty bucks cheaper AND measurably quieter than the one at restoration hardware. nice deal. one little thing, though. there's a click-click at a certain point on the rotation. every time it hits that point--click-click. i returned one and replaced it with another, got it home and same thing--click-click...

I agree with the other reviewer. it's a nice looking fan, forty bucks cheaper AND measurably quieter than the one at restoration hardware. nice deal. one little thing, though. there's a click-click at a certain point on the rotation. every time it hits that point--click-click. i returned one and replaced it with another, got it home and same thing--click-click. even at the same point on the turn. it's like a slow steady drip on a faucet. some people can ignore it. me...it drives me crazy.

UPDATE -- 5 STARS -- tried yet another much more expensive fan that was too loud, returned it, bought THIRD Hunter Fan from LNT, same problem--click-click, was done with Hunter, shot off a quick email on their website just to let them know of the defect, turns out they have pretty decent customer service, sent me another fan, NO CLICKS, at least not in the time that i wd have normally started hearing clicks. if you don't hear from me again, i'm happy and you can consider this fan, in my opinion, stylish, the quietest of the many I've tried, and at a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong, stable, & silent, January 13, 2007

This fan functions well at all three speeds: ocean breeze, tropical storm, and hurricane. I've run this fan 24/7 for several months and continue to be extremely pleased with its durability. It sits on the edge of a shelf, very sturdy, stable, and nostalgically fashionable. While oscillating a full 180 degrees or shooting a straight stream of cooled air, it continues to run quietly. Like every other oscillating fan I've owned, this fan will click when it reaches the end of its oscillation cycle if the switch is not completely engaged: simple solution = finish pushing/pulling switch. :) I strongly recommend Hunter's 12-inch table-top fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy and Quiet, May 28, 2006

I received the fan a few days ago. I was surprised how heavy the fan actually was. All of the parts are metal and it sits very sturdily on a wide base with eight rubber feet.
-The oscillation is super quiet. If you don't fully push the knob down for oscillate mode, it will click.
-The fan tilts but it does not tilt that much. It is meant for a table top. Not the floor or close to the ceiling.
-The grill easily comes apart so the blades can be cleaned.

I think this is a heavy duty appliance that's definitely worth the extra cash.

Decided after 36 years on this planet, I'm done with the ugly plastic fans. This fan says "I have arrived": Quality all metal construction, looks great, good value. Plus it makes you feel like you are in some kind of film-noir movie. Incidentally, I also own 2 beautiful ALLAIRE fans from restoration hardware and even though I love them, I can honestly say this one is just as good, costs MUCH less, and is a tad quieter to boot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hunter Century 12-Inch Fan - Very Attractive Fan, Still Expensive, July 9, 2008
This review is from: Hunter 90022 12-Inch Oscillating Table Fan, Satin Black with Brushed Nickel (Kitchen)

Hunter's Century 12-Inch Black Fan sports great looks and retro styling, though at a high price. While the quality control on these models isn't perfect, if you have any problems you can return or exchange it. You also have a very nice 5 year limited warrantee that comes with it. Bottom line, put it through the paces when you buy it! There are alternatives though, depending on what you are looking for.

Yep, it's made in China. That doesn't bother me at all. If it bothers you, look elsewhere.

What bothers me is that the 90021 Century 12-Inch Silver Fan is listed at $70 and this black version at $80. Either price is too high, but they both sell for $60 which is also too high as far as I'm concerned. Why list the different colors of the same item at different prices? These fans sell at other retailers for $50 to $60, so the list prices here are hard to accept.

It's just a fan. I realize that some people pay top dollar for top of the line. This is just "above average" though. You'll want to step up to a Vornado Silver Swan Fan or one of those highly hyped Allaire fans from Restoration Hardware if you have even more money to burn on a desk fan.

After researching a number of fans, I saw this one at my friend's house and thought it was a decent compromise. My friend's fan ran smoothly with a lot of power and minimal noise (from the fan head, not the motor). Of course, I did read about others getting clunkers. If yours is noisy, or doesn't oscillate all the way or just stops working, that's the time to use your warrantee coverage! Hunter at least does honor their warrantee, which other companies don't always seem to do.

The main negative for me, other than price, is that I don't like the power adjustment lever being on the base. I would prefer it on the motor housing. Still, that's a minor thing and you might have a different preference.

I like the look of the black model better than the silver one, though to be fair this model is really black with silver accents. Everybody has their own tastes, so preview them if you can.

For alternatives with similar metal bodies, look at the:

Vornado FA1-0003-13 Silver Swan Fan - For about $100 to $130 you get a fan that is made with more weight and *hopefully* durability and quality control. Seems a bit much for a fan though.

Soleus Air FT1-30-44 12-Inch Metal Table Fan - very comparable for about $30 to $40, but just not as attractive. There are other ones out there too. Might be worth the savings if you can't get the Hunter on sale.

Pros
+ Attractive retro styling and sleek metal body in silver and black
+ 12 inch size is just right for most uses
+ 5-year limited warranty from a company that actually honors warrantees (at least based on past experience)
+ Easy set up and operation
+ Heavy and sturdy base makes fan very sturdy
+ Standard 3-speed controls for variable air flow
+ Pretty quiet motor and aerodynamic blade design for maximum air flow

Cons
- Still expensive for a desk fan
- Silver version is such a matte finish it almost looks plastic; After a return I prefer the black one slightly, but they are both still attractive
- May require oiling over time since it's all metal
- Not crazy about the adjustment slider being placed on the base
- Higher end versions are out there for those looking for the "very best" at any price

Conclusion

Review your options. If like me you just don't want to spend $130 on a fan, this might be the one for you. If you like Soleus, you might want to check out their cheaper more affordable fan. Get this on sale and you can come close in price with the Hunter. Just make sure to test it extensively and exchange it till you get a good one.

Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good design, BAD engineering, August 10, 2006
This review is from: Hunter 90022 12-Inch Oscillating Table Fan, Satin Black with Brushed Nickel (Kitchen)
The fan is lovely and silent. Until you click on the top to make it oscillate. Within minutes.... click click click click.... the sound of two gears stripping instead of meshing.
This is a lot of money to pay for a fan that doesn't function properly one week out of the box.
Now I have to go try for a refund. I don't want a refund, I want what I paid for, a quiet oscillating fan.
Don't buy this model.

This is a very pretty fan, and the construction seems to be very good. Glossy black paint over smooth metal. I planned to use it in my bedroom (I have a small house). However, it is quite noisy, and I am not sure I can sleep with it. Will try it in Summer, perhaps I can get used to the noise. It is also a little smaller than I expected. Nevertheless, it is very good looking so if you are looking for something interesting to display to visitors, this might do.

4.0 out of 5 stars not quiet enough, August 5, 2006
This review is from: Hunter 90022 12-Inch Oscillating Table Fan, Satin Black with Brushed Nickel (Kitchen)
This fan is good and looks great, but I wish there was a lower speed. The lowest speed on this fan feels and sounds like a medium level breeze to me. It would be nice to have a quieter, gentler choice. It also makes a little noise when it reaches the edge of the oscillating arc, which can be annoying. I bought it for the bedroom, but am now using it in our family room instead.

out of the box, the fan looks great but had an odd sound and a vibration at a certain point in it's oscillation. other than that it ran fine for a couple of months. then it stopped oscillating. apparently the housing is not aligned correctly and the oscillating control knob binds on the housing. i would not recommend this fan to anyone....
