5.0 out of 5 stars Classy and Quiet
This is an elegant fan at a reasonable price. The construction is solid, the fan itself weights over 40 pounds and is mostly metal construction. On the lowest speed it is very quiet and moves quite a lot of air. It does get noisy on higher speeds, but I think that is unavoidable.

Some assembly is required, but it is simple and requires only a phillips screw...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
I purchased this fan to replace a cheap and loud Duracraft floor fan. First let me say the build quality is good. The black paint is done right and the fan does look impressive. However, the fan moves less air than my old duracraft and it is louder! This is not a sleeping fan. The only speed my wife and I can tolerate is the slowest setting and that setting moves hardly...

This is an elegant fan at a reasonable price. The construction is solid, the fan itself weights over 40 pounds and is mostly metal construction. On the lowest speed it is very quiet and moves quite a lot of air. It does get noisy on higher speeds, but I think that is unavoidable.

Some assembly is required, but it is simple and requires only a phillips screw driver and an adjustable wrench.

It looks much nicer than those cheap plastic fans and I suspect will last much longer. I liked it so well, I bought a second one.

Update 8/03/2009. While I still like this fan, I have noticed a problem that you need to be aware of. The rubber feet on the bottom of the fan do leave a mark on carpet if left there for an extended time. I noticed this when moving from one apartment to another. The stains were very difficult to remove. I've since gone to placing a small paper plate under each foot which has resolved the problem. I place the paper plates so they are fully underneath the fan and not visible.

This seems to be the best quality fan on the market without going to an industrial air mover. Everything is built heavy, with good fit and finish. It is a little hard to assemble, but not too bad. The only reason for 4 stars is that the speed switch and osculating knob seem a little spongy, not a good solid click.

I moved to an apartment without AC in the middle of LA, so I needed to organize my options. Portable AC units are costly, noisy, and rack up the electric bill. Looking into fans, I bought this knowing it was heavy duty, nice looking, and expensive. It's been 2 weeks and I LOVE this fan. It doesn't change the fact it was expensive, but it's quieter than I expected and is very powerful (not to mention looks very nice). You have to put it together yourself, which has faulty instructions, but I managed. With no tax and free shipping from AMAZON, you can't loose. You can easily spend $40 on a cheap plastic fan, but it will surely not be as powerful ,nice looking, quiet, or long lasting. If you are in need of a fan to use lot and be out in the open, seriously consider this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now this is a fan!, October 2, 2009

I am a fan of this fan! You do have to put this together yourself. But, the instructions were clear and if you go slowly and follow the directions, anybody should be able to put this together. This fan is very solid and quite heavy. Which I view as a good thing. It is rock solid and feels like the kind of fan that would have been made many, many years ago. When things were made of metal and not plastic. As some reviewers have noted, it makes a fair amount of noise at high speed. I was nervous about this when I purchased the fan. I can now report the noise is not from the fan motor, but from the incredible amount of air those fan blades are blowing into the room. In other words, it is a fan that pushes air... so, you get some wind noise at the highest speed. I have other fans and they A) don't push as much air; and B) they make more noise. So I don't view the level of noise produced at high speed as unreasonable. The great thing is at low speed, it still moves a lot of air and is very quiet compared to my other fans. We bought this fan to place in front of our wood heater to better circulate the warmth through our house. This fan is a solid and quiet solution that we are very pleased to give 5 stars!

However, the fan moves less air than my old duracraft and it is louder! This is not a sleeping fan. The only speed my wife and I can tolerate is the slowest setting and that setting moves hardly any air (the fan needs to be within 8 feet to feel it, and even at this setting it is still to loud.

Very disappointed in this purchase and would not recommend buying this fan unless noise is not an issue for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Diminished Expectations, October 28, 2009

I've had Hunter fans in the past and found their quality control was much better than with this product. The vertical shaft is not vertical, and cannot be adjusted without using home-made shims. The fan blade is out of balance causing the upper unit to vibrate. The Hunter customer service staff informed me that I would have to disassemble, re-pack, and return the unit for examination. "They do not carry replacement parts." The warranty is meaningless unless you are willing to spend the time doing what they require as described above.
I replaced the metal blade with a 30 year old WalMart plastic blade which resulted in less noise and more air movement.
The air movement noise others have complained about is due to poor design of the blades.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Plastic, September 8, 2009

We live in an old brick building with charm, high ceilings and no AC. Qaulity fans are important to us, and the Hunter 90122 Centruy 17-Inch fits the bill. It is substantial, operates with minimum noise and has an appropriatly heavy cast iron base. And yes, I'm serious, there are no plastic components (Except for the device for setting the fan height). Turn off your AC, open your windows, turn on your Hunter and go green.

Read the comments re 'noisy'. At low or medium speed the fan is not noisy in the least. Makes essentially no sound in low. But at high speed this baby could do double duty in a single engine Cessna. Puts out plenty of air in all speeds. Very happy with the purchase, it seems very well made with a heavy solid base and quality parts. Assembly instructions obviously created by a Martian - screwy-louie at best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Built, January 28, 2010

This fan is solid, and well built. I'm running it on low speed for sleeping, and it's quiet. My gripe is with the instruction booklet. It's terse, which is OK, but the photos are lousy.
They were probably done with a film camera, but the lighting is so poor, it's hard to see the components. Maybe Hunter Co. can get someone to draw the instructions. It's not expensive and over time, it cost nothing. Moreover, aligning the grill mounting screws is a pain, because they utilize lock washers, which get in the way. So, all in all, 4 stars. One person can assemble it.

I have owned and loved a tabletop version of this Hunter fan in a bedroom for years. My new pedestal floor fan is also a beautiful, well-made fan of classic design that now replaces a series of cheaper, unsatisfactory floor fans in the living room. The Hunter fan is lovely to look at, runs quietly, cools like a dream, and is well worth the discount price offered by Amazon. As others have remarked, assembly is required. It is not difficult, but I would have preferred more illustrations of the assembly process and short, bulleted step by step instructions instead of paragraphs (which require a certain amount of study to understand).
