The Hunter Classic Original ceiling fan (view larger).

A fan that has changed little in decades, Hunter's 52-inch Classic Original ceiling fan (model 23852) is still ahead of its time — earning the EPA's Energy Star certification for energy efficiency. It has chestnut brown finish that is complemented by five furniture grade veneer blades that feature a 15-degree blade pitch, a 52-inch span, and reversible oak/walnut blades. You can also mix and match other Hunter blades to suit your decor. Hunter's patented anti-vibration technology featuring the unique triangular hanger ball system reduces torque for wobble free performance.

This three-speed ceiling fan is great in both summer and winter. Set the blade rotation to counter-clockwise during the summer to help you reduce energy use without losing comfort. In the winter, set the ceiling fan on low speed with a clockwise rotation to warm up your living space by mixing the warm air trapped at the ceiling with cooler air at the bottom of the room.

Hunter Original Classic ceiling fan.
Just got off the phone with Hunter tech support. The answer to the e-mail I sent them suggested I take my fan to a local "authorized dealer" or call a 1-888 #. I called the # and waited 10 mins. for a real person. The real person was a pleasant young lady who transferred me back to the beginning of the wait cycle. Bottom line; there is no tech support. Just a minimum wage body asking you for your model #. The hint was; "take it to a local authorized dealer".
My Taiwan made "Hunter Original Classic" dripped oil on the carpet. Nice heavy quality product. I took it apart and found that the oil seal between the rotor and the oil reservoir has a gap of approx. 3/32". No wear, seal looks new, and no circular mark in the paint of the oil reservoir. I wanted to know if they recommend an upgrade of the seal. If somehow the original seal was not specified correctly or not installed according to specs.... crickets chirping...
"Classic" American success story. Executives and stock holders have sucked the company dry. Leaving a skeleton crew to market and support Pacific rim products.
It is still a decent product, but understand, after your purchase, you are on your own.

I've always been a Hunter fan (gosh that's funny!), and wanted to spend a little more on their Original Classic. I am glad I did. Every part of the fan is of higher quality. The blades have real wood veneer on each side (walnut and oak); not the wood look vinyl.

The motor housing is cast iron (over 40 pounds! be careful) and uses oil (tube include) to continuously bathe the ball bearings and circulates to other vital areas. Hence, this fan comes with a lifetime warranty. They say the oil should never have to be replaced or added to, but the level should be checked every 5 years.

They kept the old Classic look and design but improved the efficiency. It has an Energy Star rating and is the most efficient model I've ever owned (I have 2 other new Hunter fans which are not as efficient; still good though). The efficiency ratings are shown on the outside top of the box.

It's a great fan.

My husband and I searched to find a replacement "made in USA" Hunter fan. This fan was higher priced than most and I admit I was a little suspicious at the time that the description did not indicate where it was made. Upon receipt, we realized it was made in China and were highly disappointed.

Pros:
The Hunter Original is the finest fan I have ever owned. I installed five of them in my home in 1979 and have had to add oil to three of them after 20+ years of use. Two of those fans are "on" almost 24/7. The "Original" is the only fan I would ever purchase. I also installed four of them in a second residence. Well worth the extra cost if you plan to live with the "Original" for more than ten years.
Cons: None

I called Hunter Fan Company about a loud sound in the fan. This was not a cheap $100 fan. They sent me to an authorized service center in Richardson Texas to have the to have it check out. The sevice tech told me that it was the motor and that I should file a warranty claim with Hunter Fan for replacement. I paid the tech for the service and called Hunter Fan. Hunter refuses to replace claiming that the tech took off the cover and that cancels the warranty notwithstanding that this is what Hunter Fan told me to do. They have lost my business since I will now buy Casablanca or Emerson ceiling fans.

The Hunter Classic Original is a silent, effective fan. It moves a lot of air in either direction and is easy to reverse. It makes both heating and air conditioning work more efficiently. We have ten of them down in sub (barely) tropical SC and the AC hardly has to run to keep the house cool because these fans circulate the air so effectively. In what passes for winter here, we reverse the circulation and the heating unit rarely turns on and runs only briefly.

The only complaint I have is that I have found it difficult to obtain a variable speed controller that operates the fan effectively at all three speeds. Hunter makes one, apparently, but I have found them hard to find. The CONTROLLER IS SPECIFIC TO THIS FAN. Use another controller and you find that the fan does not operate correctly at low and medium speeds, which means you must have the fan specific controller or use the pull chain to adjust speeds.

Although these fans are a bit pricy, they are high quality, reliable and well worth your purchase. I have purchased three of these for my current home after owning Hunter brand fans in my previous home that were going strong after 10 years with no issues. These fans are quiet, operate smoothly and installing isn't that difficult as long as you follow the instructions. These fans will provide a long time of use and Hunter stands behind their fans as well with their warranty. Well at least they used to (from the comments I am hearing), as I haven't had a fan break in many years and haven't had to deal with their customer service in some time. I personally have had no issues with the fans reliability or customer service.

This particular model is priced about the same as the stores.
