5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Fan
Energy Star rated, which I view as a big plus. The florescent light fully lights my bedroom and is not what I would consider "harsh" light. The remote control is fantastic, especially when going to bed because I do not have to get up to turn off the lights. The fan is extremely quiet and smooth ... I have yet to hear the fixture shake. 2.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Horror To Install
These fans, while cool looking, are an absolute horror to install. If you buy them, be prepared to exercise your patience to the max. They provide too many screws which are similarly sized with no clear direction as to their use. Even when you do figure out which ones to use where, they don't go in correctly (especially in the ring around the light)! The fan has to be one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fan but change the wireless frequency during install., January 2, 2008

We had our electrician install two of these fans: one in my office and one in the master bedroom. The fan locations are on opposite ends of our house. As expected they work great. However, much to my surprise, each handheld remote unit controlled both fans. Turning one fan on resulted in both going on. A quick call to Hunter customer service confirmed my suspicion: all fans are shipped on the exact same frequency from the factory. "Just change the frequency on one fan" the support person said. The problem is changing frequencies requires removing the fan from its ceiling mount. Luckily our electrician had some free time the next day to do the change. Problem fixed. Well sort of. My neighbor has the exact some fan. Occasionally, when he turns on his fan our fan goes on. Guess our electrician needs to make one more stop at our house!

They provide too many screws which are similarly sized with no clear direction as to their use. Even when you do figure out which ones to use where, they don't go in correctly (especially in the ring around the light)! The fan has to be one of the poorest I have installed from an engineering perspective. Once they are installed, they perform decently - they are quiet. However, had I known what a pain it was to do the installation, I would have purchased another brand altogether. For the price paid for these fans, I would say they are not worth it. Don't say I didn't warn you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fan, December 31, 2007

Installed this fan in our family room. Motor is quiet and provides a nice amount of airflow. The 22w light is a bit cold and harsh like most fluorescent lights so I don't really use it much. It's packaged with a mounting rod so you can choose to mount it from around 4 inches from the ceiling to about a foot away. Good fan, nice design, nice price.

4.0 out of 5 stars great fan, ugly blades, December 21, 2007
This review is from: Hunter 21617 Palermo 52-Inch Energy Star Brushed-Nickel Ceiling Fan with 5 Maple/Cherry Blades (Tools & Home Improvement)
Easy and fast to install. Remote control based system makes wiring connections a snap.

Fan istelf looks very good - nice, sleek, modern look with good quality. Reversable blades (birch look or darker oak look) are less stellar, both seem rather dingy and uninspiring.

Works great, runs silently.

I've had mine for 2 years when the receiver stopped working. I've had this happen with other fans so it was not a big deal, but here is the problem: Spare parts can only be found from hunter for this model, not homedepot or lowes.

After a month of struiggling with the fan, getting spare parts and replacement parts from hunter and spending more than it would cost me to get a new fan, the damn thing still does not work. The fan works fine, but the light does not.

At this point, I am taking it to the back yard for a good beating and replacing it with a new fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Solid Fan, March 29, 2008

This review is from: Hunter 21617 Palermo 52-Inch Energy Star Brushed-Nickel Ceiling Fan with 5 Maple/Cherry Blades (Tools & Home Improvement)
I got this fan because of the great contemporary styling and remote control. Almost bought it at Home Depot for $280 but then found one on-line for about $200. FYI, Costco occasionally sells what seesm to be this same fan (only in their warehouse) for $139, but they call it the Hunter Westside. I just bought my second and third ones to replace my dated fans. I had to change some dip switches so that one remote doesn't control all three at once.

There is a slight delay when turning the light on and off and the light quality isn't the greatest for high usage, since it is a cicrular flourescent lamp.

The fan seems to have a light hum to it, but is otherwise very smooth, stable and quiet. I was hoping to learn the signal for my universal remote, but it is radio frequency versus infrared and not possible. RF is the better quality, since it doesn't require a direct line of sight. Overall I would highly recommend this fan, particularly if you can pay $140 versus $280.

I bought 3 of these to put in our master bedroom, living room, and the family room. The fan is attractive, quiet and has light as well as the reverse function. For the price, I think the fan is a good buy, no question.

A minor complaint is that the light is fluorescent and quite harsh.

1.0 out of 5 stars Remote control does not consistently work, June 9, 2008
By
This review is from: Hunter 21617 Palermo 52-Inch Energy Star Brushed-Nickel Ceiling Fan with 5 Maple/Cherry Blades (Tools & Home Improvement)
Bought the Palermo because of its look and the hope that by avoiding a Home Depot/Lowe's knock-off I would buy a superior product.

The controls worked sporadically after installation - but getting a change in fan speed or light required dozens of button presses. Occasionally something would change - so the remote did communicate with the fan - but completely inconsistently.

Trying different dipswitch settings and a different remote control accomplished nothing; neither did changing relative position between the fan and I.

Calls to customer care took much too long to answer - 45 minute hold times were my experience - after trying to leave a message (per the automated system direction) in a full mailbox meant going back into queue.

The answer I finally received from customer service was "your remote is experiencing interference. Not our problem."

Without an alternate way to bypass the inferior quality remote control, and incredibly poor customer service support, I would strongly urge anyone looking for a fan to look elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Remote works 98% of the time., January 1, 2011
This review is from: Hunter 21617 Palermo 52-Inch Energy Star Brushed-Nickel Ceiling Fan with 5 Maple/Cherry Blades (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have two of these fans. One was installed hardwired with no wall switch to over-ride the controls. Unfortunately, as others have written, the remote does not always work. This has made turning the fan OFF very difficult. It once took me almost an hour to turn the fan off (pressing the off button once every 5 minutes). Both of my fans have experienced this problem. It's completely random. I went a solid 4 months with no issues. Then, when we had guests come over, I could not get the fan or light to turn on! The wife wont ever turn the fan or light on for fear of not being able to turn it off at the end of the day.

I have shut down all computers and televisions in the house and still was unable to get the remote to work. The complete randomness has made trouble shooting VERY difficult.
