Having enjoyed Estes' Greyhawk Adventures books as a teenager, I picked this book up when I saw it at a used book store. Whoever wrote the back cover blurb should have been fired -- not only does it give too much information away about the book's key mysteries, but half of it describes what must be the second book in the series. The tag line reads, "A savage warrior enters a hi-tech arena". No hi-tech arena exists in this book.

Having got that out, the story itself was an exciting, easy read. Braldt the Hunter, adopted member of the Duroni tribe, is sent on a quest by the mysterious priests of Mother Moon to retrieve an artifact that will heal the beloved chief of the tribe. During the course of this quest, Braldt with the help of his friends must face both fierce monsters and his own prejudice. In the process, he learns many things about the world that call into question his tribe's deepest beliefs.

The book itself can be divided into two parts. The first is the initiation of the quest and the journey to the mountain, and the second is when they are inside the mountain. The first part flows fairly smoothly. The action is well-paced and the characters, while not deep, are distinct and consistent. The second part is disjointed and the characters have none of the consistency that marks the first part of the book. It almost seems that the second part was written before the first part but never rewritten to come into line with how the first part evolved. This is unfortunate because the setting in the second part has great atmosphere, reminiscent of Gamma World modules and Estes' own Light on Quests Mountain.
