The Hunter and The Whale by Laurens Van Der Post is a coming-of-age story of a young South African (Dutch) boy named Peter. In this novel, the protagonist narrates how he became a spotter--one who spots whales--for the whaling ship Kurt Hansen. Laurens Van Der Post writes with a skill that is rare for `modern' writers.
