Something New,
By
This review is from: Hunters Lullaby (Dig) (Audio CD)
As is to be expected from a solo album, this CD does not sound like Our Lady Peace. Raine Maida said that he enjoyed making the album because he could hear himself sing and was able to focus on this and the product is a vocally driven CD. In many of the songs Maida's singing sounds more like a `rap' i.e. a melodic fast procession of clever lyrics. This rapping of sorts in pronounced in songs like `The Less I Know' which features Jared Paul who appears to be a hip-hop/rap singer. The message of the songs range from broad political songs like `One Second Chance' to personal songs like the kind message in `Earthless' or the personal reverie in `Yellow Brick Road'. There are a few weaker songs on the album in my opinion like `Confessional' but I think that many of the songs like `Rat Race' will continue to grow on me in the way that OLP songs always did. All in all, a neat solo album that allows you to get a more personal view of Maida and a feeling for what he wants his music to sound like. My personal favorites so far are `Yellow Brick Road' which sounds most like OLP, `Careful What You Wish For' and `Earthless' which I identify with personally. I will be using it to hold me over until the new OLP CD comes out mid next year.

If you think about it...,

This review is from: The Hunter's Lullaby (Digital Version) (MP3 Download)
Honestly, if you think about it... this is where OLP has been headed for a while. There have been elements of this album in OLP for a while. This is an absolutely fantastic album. Unlike some other reviews, I don't find a weak song in the mix. It does a wonderful job of taking you through a rollercoaster of emotions and feelings. It has a strong attitude, it has deep emotion spilling out, it's got an arrogance to it, it's got angst. Everything you could want. It just does all of this without masses of distorted guitars.
It's definitely arranged a little different than OLP, but I think true OLP fans will appreciate it for what it is, rather than being disappointed because it's not what they want from OLP. This is easily one of the best albums I've come across lately.

I am a huge fan of Our Lady Peace and I found out about two months after the solo album came out that Raine did a solo album. I bought the album digitally because its often hard to find Our Lady Peace albums here, so this way I was saved from searching stores for the album. Since I've downloaded I can't stop listening to it! It is completely different from anything OLP has out and just great! Pick it up and have a listen. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
