No one but American television actress Zephyr West -- the bride-to-be -- is celebrating rock star Ken Cryer's upcoming wedding. Zephyr's ex-husband, Dwight Schlumberger, is convinced that she can be persuaded to remarry him, and their daughter, Treasure, has teamed with Ken's son, Jem Cryer, to derail the coming nuptials. Ken's staff is also opposed to the marriage, while his ardent fans are protesting openly and loudly. Even Ken is having second thoughts -- thoughts that close friends are encouraging.
But someone has crossed the line. It begins with written death threats, which prompt Ken to seek the help of Superintendent Robert Bone. Although somewhat distracted by the impending birth of his child, Bone agrees to investigate. But as he organizes security for the gala wedding at the restored Herne Hall, Ken disappears -- and a man's body is found in a quarry near his estate. If Bone doesn't quickly work his way through a maze of deceptions, delusions, and secrets long past, the groom may be dead before he can say "I do."

A Very British Mystery,

"Hunter's Quarry" is the first Susannah Stacey book I've read, and it may be the last since it's the only one my library has. There's a lot of the elements dear to British cozy fans - a bucolic estate; murders, past and present; an intrepid police inspector; and a cast of suspects that includes a wealthy dowager, the perfect butler, a spoiled actress, a retired military man, and a charming old lady with more than her share of intuition, not to mention cats. There's even a couple of rock stars thrown in to bring the genre up to date. If you can get past the fact that the protagonist's lovely wife is saddled with the unlovely moniker "Grizel Bone" you'll find an enjoyable read.

Inspector Bone has long been a favorite of mine, so I was looking forward to "Hunter's Quarry". However, the mystery never captured my interest, and the characters were rather one-dimensional. Given the previous winners from the Stacey duo, I expected more.

I've been reading all of their books this winter, and I enjoyed this one in the series. Personally I think they only get better over time. The mystery is a bit confusing at times, but the characters are great fun and it moves right along.
