4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Africana
If you are into reading about old time African hunters, this book is one you must have on your shelves. He was obviously a very tough man who lived a life full of adventure. If you read many other old time African hunters, you will find this book to complement others. Well worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars A different take
While the historical value of this book is undeniable for it's descriptions of an Africa that is no more, I found the book to drag a bit as far as reading enjoyment. I would say that there are far more engaging books for the casual reader of hunting, exploration and adventure books. Much of the text is devoted to somewhat redundant descriptions of travel, setting up camp,...

If you love hunting and Africa this is the book for you. It is all hunting. There is somethings about the people. A little about his guns, but he went on to become one of the greatest African hunters ever. The great game reserve of Tanzania is named for him. I loved this book. It is direct and to the point, hunting, hunting and more hunting. Read it and enjoy. thanks

One of the very best exploration/hunting history books about Africa. Well written and easy reading.
These oldtime hunters were tough.

I'm writing this review on behalf of my husband, who I bought the book for. We had just returned from a safari to South Africa, and my husband re-read Horn of the Hunter for the upteenth time. I bought the book because it had received excellent reviews on Amazon.com. I trust those reviews. Well, he loved the book! He couldn't put it down, and would often read excerpts to me. I'm sure this is another book he will re-read...perhaps on our next trip to Africa!

3.0 out of 5 stars A different take, November 3, 2011

While the historical value of this book is undeniable for it's descriptions of an Africa that is no more, I found the book to drag a bit as far as reading enjoyment. I would say that there are far more engaging books for the casual reader of hunting, exploration and adventure books. Much of the text is devoted to somewhat redundant descriptions of travel, setting up camp, suffering from fever and shooting whatever game animals happened to be at hand in order to keep his porters in meat. The tales of his pursuit of and engagements with elephants which are scattered through the book are much more engaging than the rest. If you're assembling a collection, by all means include this title but I wouldn't start here if you're looking for exciting reading.
