Greatest Find in Hunting Literature,

This review is from: Hunting Big Whitetails: Tactics Guaranteed to Make You a More Successful Whitetail Hunter (Paperback)
This book is truly a hidden gem in a sea of whitetail hunting books, websites, and articles.
Since I have been old enough to hunt, I have been reading articles, books, and websites on whitetail hunting. While I have been successfully in the sense that I usually get a deer even when a majority of the other people in my party goes home empty handed, I have yet to have a big buck mounted on the wall. While I measure my hunting success based on the wildlife goals of the area, which usually means shooting does of which I am just as proud to get, I wanted to hone my skills to increase my chances to at least see bigger bucks. While I have bagged deer 12 of 14 hunting seasons, I have only seen 2 trophy class bucks in that time, one of which I was young, got excited and missed, and the other was a poor shot with the weapon I had, so I did not shoot. My first surprise with this book is that the author has the eloquence of a fine poet. The text in the book flows together flawlessly. The book takes a no nonsense approach to hunting big bucks. Virtually every facet of whitetail hunting is covered in this book except review of hunting equipment. The book consists of 22 well-developed chapters. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter. By the time the complete book is read, the author has laid out a detailed outline of how to bag a big whitetail buck. The author brings up points that I would have never though of before, such as why scents may be bad, what survival equipment is important to carry, and the idea of using a sleeping bag while hunting. The author has well thought out chapters on various hunting techniques including stand-hunting, still-hunting, deer drives, snow tracking, and stalking. Each of these chapters discusses the benefits and limitations of each technique. I felt the best chapters were the chapters on finding whitetails, after the shot, and sportsmanship. The book ends with a fabulous story about sportsmanship that reminded me that there are still true hunters out there who respect the art of hunting. I feel this book can benefit any whitetail hunter. The book will help lay out a plan for the inexperienced hunter as well as fine tune the plans of the experienced hunter. The author has an abundance of hunting knowledge to share with the reader, and is able to do so in a clear manner. If nothing else, I felt the book built confidence in my hunting abilities. My words cannot do this book justice; it is really an undiscovered treasure. Happy hunting!

A deer hunting gem!,

I have hunted whitetails in Minnesota for over twenty seasons with less than average success. This easy to read text gave me the confidence and tips than helped me bag my first large whitetail buck. I prefer to hunt "the big woods" alone. From this book I learned how big bucks differ in their behavior from other deer. It helped me understand what is happening in the field and what signs to look for. I now see and hear more deer than I used to. My hunting is more enjoyable (and successful) than ever before. The book is the standard re-read every year before the opener. I strongly recommend it!

Going after Big Bucks,

Growing up in a deer hunting family, my father taught me not only how to "think" like a deer, but how to practice the art of hunting in such a manner as to assure maximum enjoyment of the entire hunting adventure. Such things as planning the hunt, selecting and maintaining the proper equipment, getting your body and mind into the right condition. As I read Bruce Nelson's Hunting Big Whitetails I often stopped to reflect on how completely this fine fellow enjoys and celebrates the experience of being a hunter. I've never read a book that deals more completely--and in such detail--with every aspect of the nature of Whitetail deer, how they behave in various types of cover and terrain, and, most importantly, how you as a hunter can enrich your experience by these understandings. Bruce brings to the hunting experience not only a great deal of expertise and skill, but also an ethic that reflects the kind of values we in the hunting community want to preserve and portray. My Dad loved the book and so did I. No wonder all the reviews scored it five stars. A must on the shelf of any serious hunter. A great gift for a hunting buddy.

'Hunting Big Whitetails' is a contemporary book that easily matches the quality of the 'Greats'. It's readily in the same league shared by fewer than a dozen other classic hunting books of the past century and a half. The author shares with his readers many fascinating storys of hunts and techniques. Do, these techniques work? Well, all you have to do is briefly 'thumb' through the book and you will see the greatest photographic collection of the largest whitetail deer ever published between two covers of one book. The written word, in every respect, matches the record-class photos. In short, it's a great book, destined to become a 'classic' and is a 'must have' for any hunter.

Being a firm believer in the concept of "with knowledge comes success," I read a minimum of two to three hunting books a week. Though most simply reiterate common information or rehash the obvious, every now and then a book comes along that stands out above the rest. Hunting Big Whitetails by Bruce Nelson is such a book!Concise, well-written and easy-to-read chapters provide the reader with detailed information on what he or she needs to know to harvest a trophy buck. Whether you are a seasoned hunter or new to the sport, I highly recommend that you add this book to your library! You won't be disappointed!!

You won't find a better book on "hunting Big Whitetails"!,

I own many books on deer hunting. This is not another repetitious "how to" on your basic scrape, rub, trail, bedding, etc. on Whitetail deer. I found it to be extremely informative, very enjoyable, and hard to put down. The author will no doubt help the beginner but even the experts will pick up many tips on becoming more successful. His hard work, dedication and desire for hunting, using his senses to the best of his ability, his understanding of the whitetail, especially seasoned older bucks, his intense and graphical account of past experiences, and his sense of humor make it a joy to read. My three kids have read it also. This is the book I continue to go back to for knowledge, research, and inspiration.

A Fine book certain!,
This review is from: Hunting Big Whitetails: Tactics Guaranteed to Make You a More Successful Whitetail Hunter (Paperback)
I have been deer hunting for over 20 years and still found this book highly entertaining, but more importantly, highly useful. This book has been written in a manner that is easy to read and understand. It is also written in a manner that covers everything from basics for beginners to tips for the advanced. I have read many, many hunting books and this one ranks with the best. It is not packed with hunting stories just to be told, but to illustrate points. I do not purchase or read books fluffed with stories, I read them to give me advice to give me any advantage I did not have before. Thats what this book does. If you need a truly good "all around" deer hunting book then stop wasting time and buy this one. Take it from an ol' salt who has read alot of hunting books with useless information.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hunting Big Whitetails. It's not only a complete "how-to" from start to finish, but contains fascinating personal experiences by the author that further substantiates his tactics. It's written in a way that brings the hunt vividly to the reader's imagination. As an avid hunter myself, the book brought the thrill of the hunt so close to "being there" that I found myself out on a track soon after finishing the book. In a few short words, it's real life hunting.

HUNTING BIG WHITETAILS IS A WINNER!!!,
By MARK SCHULMAN (Spokane, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hunting Big Whitetails: Tactics Guaranteed to Make You a More Successful Whitetail Hunter (Paperback)
When ordering "Hunting Big Whitetails", I fully expected it to be just another review of the basic whitetail hunting skills covered in so many other books. Much to my surprise, I received the book and found it not only both "very" informative on all aspects of Whitetail hunting, but also "very" enjoyable reading! This book would be "very" good reading for begining hunters of all ages and seasoned hunters such as myself, will find it both enjoyable and informative. An exceptional addition to anyone's library and "highly" recommended! This is the "best" Whitetail Hunting Book I have ever had the pleasure to read and now my son is reading it in preparation for his first hunt next season.

Being pretty new to hunting and only having 2 full seasons under my belt I felt that I didn't really have the knowledge required to be an effective hunter. My confidence in the field wasn't all that high and I was looking for a good book that could fill me in on all the things that I didn't understand. After reading the reviews on this book I decided that this was the one I was looking for and WOW I was right!
Everything is covered in this book! After reading it I really feel like I have a much better understanding of whitetail behavior, plus, I'm much more confident. It's not just about deer either; it addresses so many other aspects of hunting. It covers, gear, firearms, proper shot placement, and that's just for starters. I can't wait until this fall for deer season. I know the only way to become a true veteran hunter is to spend years in the field, but this book will certainly give you a boost if you're looking for some good knowledge! |
