"After enjoying 50 hunting seasons and collecting 66 deer, 33 of which were blacktails, Dr. Terkla has compressed his field experience into a small, unbelievably informative book.....Anyone who can bag 33 of them must know what he is doing, and Dr. Terkla's savvy shows on each page of his book. His volume opens with the animals themselves, discussing their range, habitat, diet, behavior and routines, both daily and seasonal. Diseases and parasites that plague them aren't neglected either. Hunting techniques are detailed: still hunting, hunting timber, stand hunting, bow hunting, drive hunting, muzzleloader hunting, use of calls and decoys, hunting in the snow - he covers every aspect of the sport.....The result is a well-organized, lucid, easy-to-read text, filled with useful information. Although specifically dedicated to the Columbian blacktail, the hunting techniques and field tips he describes should help any sportsman become a better hunter, no matter what animal he seeks." Well researched and very informative,

Shelves of books exist about whitetails, but very little is in print concerning blacktailed deer. Terkla fills a real need. I am an amatuer naturalist and a hunter, and I found his book to be very well researched. He cites from numerous studies found only in college archives and wildlife department file cabinets: information that is inexcessible to the general public. It compares favorably to the text on blacktails published in the 1950s by the Washington Department of Game (now the Department of Fish and Wildlife). Details include the seasonal movement and diet of blacktails, their favored habitat, and the best methods to observe and hunt these shy creatures. Forget about trying to translate what you read about whitetails or mule deer to the blacktailed deer. This book will deals with them specifically.

I found this to be a very useful book. The author is a successful and specialized blacktail hunter who relates his own style and tactics. This and Boyd Iverson's book are both excellent in this way. This is NOT one of those awful "anecdote" books which is more like a collection of hunting magazine articles. This is a lifetime hunter telling his own story.

This book was very helpful, I have always had questions about blacktail deer and this book answered most of them. It helped with knowing their food and how it relates to your hunt, it went off of research done in Oregon about blacktail and to better understand how they behave threw out the season. Not many books on Oregon blacktail but this book hits a home run. A blacktail may not be the biggest of all deer but I can say he is without any question the toughest deer to hunt! Good luck on your quest!
