A must read for any modern archer!!!!,
By Chad Davis (The Natural State... Arkansas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hunting with the Bow & Arrow (Paperback)
Saxton Pope, one of the fore-fathers of modern achery, takes you on a journey of archery back in the early 20th century. This is a very informative and captivating read. Anybody with an interest in archery will find this book hard to lay down. Pope begins with the story of the last Yana indian, Ishi, which he became close friends with. He speaks of Ishi's equipment and his methods, and their adventures together. Fasinating!!! He then explains how to make and use the archery equipment which he and his comrades, Art Young and Will Compton, used on their many excursions. These excursions are then written about in detail in a manner which carries you back into the early 1900's!! Many of these adventures, such as lion and bear hunting, had never before been undertaken by modern bowhunters, and an air of uncertanity existed. In one story a charging grizzly is stopped just a few steps away!!! Awsome!!! You'll have to read it to find out more!!! I feel sure it will become one of your all time favorites!!!!

Hunting with the Bow and Arrow by Saxton Pope
Nostalgia. Pope was one of the people who befriended Ishi, the lost Native American Indian. They shot together and hunted together with many a wise word from Ishi. Pope starts his hunting in a different world as we see it today. Penned in 1922 there is no finesse in the hunting stories. His adventures are interesting and his methods are strengthened with Ishi's wisdom and experience. Pope and his friend Young were the instigators of the trophy hunt with sometimes distance being no object. Entertaining and interesting.

A waste of money,

This review is from: Hunting With the Bow and Arrow (Paperback)
My fist experience with Hunting With the Bow and Arrow was long ago in a wonderful old first edition hardback version in my small hometown library. It made a lasting impression. In time I found the book in paperback. That copy has been read and reread so many times it is falling apart. I decided to buy a new copy through Amazon as a replacement. What a ripoff! The version from Amazon, published by General Books, and dated 2010, lacks all the illustrations of the original edition. Yet, all the illustrations are cited within the text. Further, the chapters run on one after the other, unseparated, as if they had been printed out on fan-fold paper. The crude table of contents does not list page numbers for the chapters, you have to hunt for them. If you want to learn how to make longbows, the text is there, but none of the illustrations, which convey so much information. If you want to learn about Ishi, the text is there, but none of the wonderful old photographs. If you want an illustrated version of the book, and you should, go to one of the on-line used book sellers and order an earlier version. The Amazon offering isn't worth the price paid for it.

Great piece of history.,

This review is from: Hunting with the Bow & Arrow (Paperback)
Saxton Pope gives a great historic account of Ishi, the last wild Indian (native American), from building archery tackle with him to hunting the way his people hunted. Pope goes on to explain, in great detail, the art of making one's bow, string, arrows, points, fletching, nocks, quivers, arm guards, finger tabs, etc. Also included is a explanation of shooting techniques, performance characteristics of various bow-types from around the globe, and hunting stories from various famous archers. This book is a real classic and will especially be a good addition to library of those who are a purest when it comes to archery and hunting.
