4.0 out of 5 stars Alaska-Hunter's Paradise-Bears, Moose, Sheep....and Williwah?, April 15, 2011
This review is from: Hunting the Land of the Midnight Sun: A Collection of Hunting Adventures from the Alaska Professional Hunters Association (Hardcover)
Hunting the Land of the Midnight Sun, an anthology of Alaskan hunting tales, is not for the hunter looking for advice on how to prepare for a trip to the Great North but it is definitely an entertaining read for someone that has an interest in what happens to hunters and guides that have been there and done that. I was surprised to see that there are a few women in Alaska that have become professional guides and I wish there were more chronicled in the book as they seem thoroughly dedicated to the job.

Like most anthologies, the stories tend to follow the same plot line of how the hunter struggled long and hard to take a once in a lifetime trophy and after a while, it seems as though I was basically hearing the same tale over and over. A few of the short stories contained in Hunting the Land of the Midnight are real jewels though, and one in particular is Sport and Adventure on Unimak Island by Jim Shockey.

Jim Shockey is a well known hunter, adventurer and writer and he does a very good job of bringing to life his effort to bag a brown bear on Unimak Island with a muzzleloading rifle. Shockey managed to deal with an eruption at Pavlof volcano, a guide that snored loud enough to make Shockey stuff his ears with wet toilet paper to try to sleep, plus a williwah and Beaufort force 11 winds. In case you're wondering what a williwah is, it apparently is a sudden rush of cold air that races down the side of Alaskan mountains at 100 mph and usually flattens everything in its path, like a certain tent occupied by Jim Shockey near Isanotski volcano.

As I mentioned earlier, if you're looking for a book that tells you what sort of gun and gear to bring for a successful Alaskan hunt, Hunting the Land of the Midnight Sun is not for you. If you're looking for a book that gives you a taste of what it must be like to be in Alaska and get a few good laughs in the process, then buy this book and enjoy.
