Soon after my first book, "How to Find Giant Bucks," was published in 1983, readers began encouraging me to write another book -- one that would cover elk, bighorn sheep, black bear and other Western big game along with more details on trophy mule deer hunting. Unlike the first book, this is not a series of detailed "how to" and "where to" chapters. Rather, this is for the most part a collection of fun-to-read hunting narratives with useful information woven into the text. A perceptive reader will learn a great deal even as he reads the stories. Some chapters have been contributed by friends who had worthwhile stories to tell. As with the first project, I decided to do it right. My first book was full of photographs, including many color prints, but we've added even more color pictures to this volume. I've worked again with ghostwriter and rewrite expert, Rich LaRocco, because readers appreciate the way he makes stories come to life and imparts information in an easy-to-read, entertaining manner. I believe we make a good team. I've strived again to produce a first-class printing job with top-rate art, typesetting, color separations, laminated color cover, and so forth. I was raised by a father who believed that big-game hunting in the world's most healthful, invigorating and challenging activity. He taught me not only how to hunt but why I should hunt. It was through his example that I've learned to respect all animals -- game and non-game -- and to appreciate all the bounty that Mother Nature provides. I make no excuses for hunting, feeling sorry only for those who have never had the opportunity to bugle in a gigantic bull elk with antlers like tree branches, watch a gigantic desert bighorn ram walk on the skyline, revel in riding a good saddle horse in a pristine wilderness, or enjoy any of the many other priceless experiences I've been privileged to enjoy. My fondest hope is that you and I will be successful in preserving for generations to come the excitement and satisfaction of big-game hunting in the Rockies.
About the Author
Kirt Darner was born in 1939 in El Centro, California, but spent most of his life in New Mexico before moving to Montrose, Colorado, in 1976. A graduate of Mesa Community.

the book provides entertaining stories of hunting trips by the author and his hunting buddies. while not overly emphasizing hunting strategies, the stories do touch on a few strategies required for successful hunting. overall a good, well written book.
