A HIGH OCTANE DRAMA ABSORBINGLY READ,
This review is from: Hunting Season (Hardcover)
Sometimes angry, sometimes anguished, suspicious and stealthy, the voice of Dick Hill reveals all of these feelings as he renders this absorbing story of a father's search for his missing daughter.Three college students are hiking around an abandoned military complex when presto - they disappear. The FBI soon chalks it up to a youthful runaway. However, one father knows better, and he's not your typical parent-next-door. Edwin Kriess is a former member of a special CIA group that was trained to find and capture. He's determined to trace his daughter's abductors, and sets about doing so. The FBI doesn't look kindly upon his investigations - he may have too much information, and what will he discover? Thus, the tracker becomes the tracked when the FBI dispatches someone to ferret out the truth from Kniess. It's a trigger sharp, twisting yarn, and Dick Hill weaves it beautifully.

Another great read,

I just finished reading Mr. Deutermann's new novel, and it was great. I still get claustrophobic thinking about the scene in the cave! The book was hard to put down, and really really interesting in the details of the main character's actions. I hope though, that we see these characters again, I feel like there is so much more I want to know about the main character, I wasn't ready to let him go. If you are already a fan, read this book, you won't be disappointed. If you are new to this super author, this is a good one to start with, you will become a fan.

5 stars not enough,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hunting Season (Hardcover)
I read LOTS of books and I believe this is one of the absolute best I have ever read. Well written, plausable storyline, incredible thrills, and unusual twists. Great characters, both good and bad.Went to the library and checked out every book he has written that was available. This review won't discuss the plot because you should read it without any prior information.I would offer one simple solution for you - buy it, rent it, get it. You will not be disappointed. A SLAM DUNK BOOK that should be at the top of any list of outstanding thrillers.

Good Solid Thriller with some serious problems,
By N. Richardson "nano" (Los Angeles, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hunting Season (Mass Market Paperback)
A ripping yarn, but it is clear the author has an agenda which might at first be budget problems or turf wars for the Feds. Or maybe he justed hated Janet Reno. He doesn't let political facts stand in the way of his imagination, which is okay. His FBI is bunch of incompentent fumblers. His heroine has seven years experience with the Fibbies, but sure is dense when it comes to being briefed by "horse holders." Then again, there is the problem of basic procedure which regard to the baddies. Uh, wouldn't one imagine that some law enforcement agency would be able to call up background check on ol' Jared and know pretty quickly that his Daddy died in WACO. I think so....and I think life you love male oriented adventure fiction with a hard right wing skrew, the logic and procedural problems will not bother the reader too much. I am fussy about accuracy in police precedurals, but Deutermann has an instinctive understanding of plotting, and a pretty good handle on pacing and dialogue. Perfect for that long plane ride to nowhere. And lot better than Tom Clancy hack jobs.

Mr. Deuterman does it again,
By
This review is from: Hunting Season (Hardcover)
This is the fourth novel I have read by Captain Deuterman and he just keeps getting better. This story has a very believable plot, interesting characters and crisp dialogue. I really like this author's style. The story always moves along and doesn't bog down with excessive technical details as do some authors of this genre. I eagerly await his next book.

Remember It is Fiction,
This review is from: Hunting Season (Hardcover)
When I first saw this book I thought it looked like a typical "rogue agent vs. Washington establishment" suspense thriller, so I took a pass. However, after looking it up at Amazon.com and reading all the five-star reviews, I decided to take a chance. I knew I had made the correct decision while reading the first page! This is an absorbing novel with intriguing, well-developed characters, especially the female sweeper, Daniella Morganavicz, ex- FBI agent Edwin Kreiss, and disillusioned agent Janet Carter. The plot is believable and is written as if it really happenned. The secret deals, inter-agency competition, and dislike and mistrust each of the characters have for each other are themes interwoven throughout the story. The author takes the reader behind the headlines and takes full advantage of the public's naivete and ignorance about what actually takes place at the higher levels of the CIA, FBI, and BATF. He has created characters with the traits the public suspects and fears most. The positions of power are held by people who are power-hungry, immoral and self-serving and guided by the belief that the end always justifies the means. One of the advantages of fiction though, is the author can get the results he wants and in this case the conclusion is very satisfying. This book is highly recommended with one caveat: you must remind yourself it is a work of fiction.

Captain Deutermann is in the HUNT. Again.,
By Norm Harris "Writer" (Kent, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hunting Season (Hardcover)
I have had the pleasure of reading four P. T. Deutermann novels to date. Mr. Deutermann's story telling is like a fine wine, it seems to improve with age. I have totally enjoyed every Deutermann offering that I have read.I was first introduced to author Deutermann when I read Sweepers, then I read Scorpion in the Sea, and finally Zero Option. I write in the military genre myself, primarily Navy, and noticed that while Mr. Deutermann has gotten away from writing about his roots, the Navy, that he is still not opposed to attacking the establishment. Our federal government, bless their hearts, are such an easy target, don't you think? In Hunting Season, Deutermann returns to using a woman, Janet Carter, as one of his primary protagonists. Remember Karen from Sweepers? Janet, a rookie Fed, reminded me of Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs. And, like Sweepers, he has introduced to us to yet another sweeper. This time he writes about a good sweeper. How could there be such a thing as a good sweeper I ask? The psychological profile of the beast spells psychopath. Hunting Season is a thriller in every sense of the word; its plot is both quick in pace and quick in action. And with enough twists and turns to keep any thrill seeking reader happy. P. T. Deutermann has a winner again so go hunting for and find Hunting Season.

Just as entertaining the second time around!,
By
This review is from: Hunting Season (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the first of P.T.'s books that I read that I found in a bag of second-hand books. I was immediately drawn to the story because I lived near Roanoke and Blacksburg, VA many years ago, when the "Ramsey Arsenal" was still open. From "Hunting Season" I learned about "sweepers" and other specially trained agents and the technology that is available to them as well as the difficult politics of "staying alive" as a Fed (or ex-Fed).Most of the book takes place in and around the old arsenal and is well described. The underground syphon chamber that was used to flush away bad batches of toxic chemicals was interesting but the various scenarios surrounding it were a bit much as was the constant vehicle switching. But the story is great, and I am reading it for the second time, after 9/11. This book has it all-FBI, CIA, ATF, mountain men, and all the "toys" Kreiss uses that makes a gun unecessary.

Riveting!,
By
This review is from: Hunting Season (Audio Cassette)
Yep, I’ve got to agree with the other reviewers. This book deserves a full 5-star rating. It’s that good. Imagine this, a loved one is missing and you don’t feel that the authorities are doing all they can to locate that person. The average person lacks the skill, knowledge and resources to find out what’s happened. Just so happens in this case, one of the parents is a former special agent who's been specially trained to track and hunt people down. He decides to conduct a search of his own – and he’s got access to enough special equipment and skills to do a good job. Unfortunately, his former employer doesn’t like the fact that he’s “resurfaced.” So they decide to do something about it. An FBI agent who just wants to do a good job, gets involved with the case and discovers there’s more to it than meets the eye. Why is the FBI more interested in the former employee than the missing students? She decides to find out. Unfortunately, she’s not exactly trained well enough to do a good job, but she tries. Making some dumb mistakes along the way, I might add. Then there’s the angry parent of a man who died at Waco. He’s been holding a grudge against the government for years. Now, he’s got some diabolical plans of his own and he’s not going to let anyone get in the way of his plans. Now add all that up and you get a plausible story with suspense, thrills, plenty of action, blood, bullets, dog chases, special effects, danger, and hiding places. This book will grab your attention from the beginning and won’t let go until the end. My only, albeit minor, complaint was the dumb FBI agent that tries to help out. She really tries, but well, she TRULY lacks the skills to get in on the hunt. Luckily, that doesn’t take away from the book. Instead, it adds to your stress level as you read on, biting your fingernails to the quick, as you try to find out what’s going to happen next and whether or how she'll make it out of the next scrape she gets herself into. My recommendation, buy it. And if you decide to buy the unabridged audio book version, you’re in for a special treat. The talented Dick Hill is the reader. His ability to set the tone of a book and add thrills, chills, etc. just when it’s needed, makes listening to him a real treat.

Super-Agent Kreiss is my kinda guy,
By Andy Edie (Kansas City, Missouri) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hunting Season (Hardcover)
This is my second attempt to write a review for this book. I apparently was too forthcoming in the reasons why I like the Edwin Kreiss character so much. This time I will just say that I share his sentiment for the punishment the kidnappers of his daughter deserve. Hunting Season is wrought with political infighting between the government's different alphabet agencies, the FBI, the CIA, the ATF, not to mention the Justice Department. Figuring out who is being honest, and what the real motives are behind any of the actions of these agencies is a mystery in itself, and adds to the enjoyment of this book. Throw in Kreiss, a former CIA/FBI super-agent who specialized in hunting down other agents, and you have one heck of a good book. If you are viewing this review, then you are probably already interested in this book, so do yourself a favor and read it. |
