Bebe's Kids, November 16, 2009
This review is from: The Hunts (Paperback)
The Hunts by Natasha Usher portrays the modern day Bebe's Kids. There are five Hunt children. The oldest and only girl is Victoria. She was named after her mom's favorite soap opera star, Victoria Rowell. The four boys are Luther (of course named after Luther Vandross), DougRoss (named after George Clooney's character on ER), Tyger (named after Tiger Woods), and Tyler (you guessed it...named after Tyler Perry).
They are ages seven to 13; which means they have been terrorizing Acon, Georgia for the last 13 years. Their parents just up and left them alone. And, now the teachers, judges, and sheriff are left to deal with them. Luther, who has a love for basketball, decides that he must make it to Atlanta for the Hawks vs Celtics playoffs. Who knows when the Hawks will be in the playoffs again? The sheriff decides that Acon needs a break from the Hunts and sends them off to the big city.
Usher brilliantly describes the city of Atlanta. The mayhem that occurs with the Hunts is down right hilarious. The Hunts is easy to understand and enjoyable to read. I think young adults will enjoy this book. I will be recommending this book to some of the girls that I mentor.

This review is from: The Hunts (Paperback)
Young adult author Natasha Usher introduces us to The Hunts. The story of five abandoned children in a tiny Georgia town called Acon is apparently a Party of Five gone horribly wrong. The Hunt children, all named after celebrities have been left to fend for themselves for the past two years when their parents go to the store for milk and never return. Since then, the children have caused all kinds of problems for the townspeople who come up with a unique way to be rid of the children if only for a few days. Author Natasha Usher has a fantastic comic flair suited perfectly for the young adult genre in which she writes. Her witty style makes light of a contemptible situation and its effects on five innocent children forced to grow up before their time. This is not to say she takes the subject lightly; rather she makes it bearable and oddly humorous. At times, you don't know whether to cry for the Hunts or scream in exasperation at their antics which somehow always works out for the better for them. Natasha Usher is a very talented writer and well deserving of the Georgia Author of the Year nomination this book garnered.

A very funny story that gives whole new meaning to sibling rivalry, but reminds us what "being a family" can do for even the most dysfunctional of people. A great read for 10+!
